camera recommendations

Soo my girlfriend has always wanted a nice camera because she is really into photography.
Christmas is coming, connect the dots.

What do you guys recommend as a beginner camera?

my price range is around 300-700.

also would it be better to buy a cheaper camera around 3-400 and upgrade lenses, etc? idk

what do you guys think?

So, after a little research i've found the Nikon d40.. what do you guys think?
my questions up top remain along with these:

What is the flexibility in upgrading lenses or changing them with this camera, and how easy is it to find filters, covers and accessories and such for it?

what would i be looking at spending to buy this camera, an upgraded lense, filters, etc and a fancy little carrying case lol

filters u can buy ANYWHERE..best buy radioshack..even walmart. also u can upgrade lenses on any new dslr. in my honest opinion the d40 is ehh..lol
