differences in differentials....

I got a question for the S13 heads:

Do all 180sx/Silvia (S13) have an LSD?

Here’s why I ask.

I’ve got a mystery differential, the shop I bought it from said it it was a Nismo 2 way imported from Japan out of an S13. The problem is that it has five bolt star pattern output flanges.
It has the four bolt diff cover so that also says its from an S13. Also, it doesn’t have soft bushings up front suggesting it was in an S13. The 5 bolt flanges threw me off. I read that 180sx’s have the 5 bolt pattern.

^You can kinda see the output flanges in this pic

In my car I’ve got a US VLSD with the 3 groups of 2 bolt pattern that we’re all familiar with. I’m just wondering if I would be able to pull my output flanges out, and stick them into the mystery diff and still make it work. I’ve heard that regular diffs and VLSDs output flanges are different.

So IF all JDM differentials (from S13s) are VLSD, and my mistery one was upgraded, it would suggest that it was originally a VLSD and I could safely install my 240’s VLSD output flanges onto the new diff.
Would I be correct to assume so? Or should I just get J30 axles and call it a day (more money needed)? And if so, what year J30?

if it helps, the part number on the casing is 38311 40F00

why dont you just pull the nismo 2 way out(if it really is one) and stick it in your diff

i really hope it is one. To tell you the truth, I opened it up and it looked different than pictures of a stock or vlsd one so at the time, I assumed it was.

by reading that statement can you tell I don't have a single clue as to how to do that? haha. I started trying to pry it out (step 1 according to some internet how to's) and a buddy of mine said i should probably let a transmission shop such as broward powertrain worry about the swap. I called, they want blood and both of my legs for labor. I figured if its used and in a proper S13 pumpkin (hoping it was installed there correctly the first time) then I could just swap the whole thing in and not worry about breaking it trying to swap internals myself.

Also, if the mystery diff is in a non-LSD pumpkin would it even go into an LSD pumkin? I know when you buy a new aftermarket LSD they ask if you've got an LSD or not becuase there are slight differences there as well.

you can't believe everything you read on the forums braahh I once read a thread that talked about sr's being better than KA-t but we all know that's just silly.

lol
but yeah, that's why i stopped with the pry bar idea. Trying to think of a better one

throw jbweld in your diff it will lock up good

BRILIANT! and then I'll buy an integra!

jp man, you're cars cute!

really tho, anyone in the know wanna throw in an idea? If anything, I'll just pull everything out of the car and sit the flanges next to eachother and compare

looks like that's my safest bet, thanks.

but if anyone knows about vlsd flanges in japanese diffs, please chime in. otherwise i'll mess around and post what i figure out. thnx ya'll

Leo you suck at driving so theres no justice there. And you say "This" to everything so you should change your name to This Guy, and you can't just pry it out i looked at work one day how to take it out and you have to unbolt shit and stuff

haha!
yeah, i didn't want to play with anything considering i didn't know the torque specs of anything so i just put it back together. seeing as how i've done that, i'll probably have to have broward powertrain give it the once over anyway

well when i go to work tomorrow ill see if i can find the schematic on how to remove it and print it and try to post up on here if you want
