Dont buy XBOX 360!

NEW YORK — The buzz started six months ago.

There's Bill Gates on the cover of Time magazine in May, with a glowing green-and-white machine. "Inside Bill's New Xbox" it screamed.

Since then, the Xbox 360 — a sequel to Microsoft's Xbox video-game unit — has been the subject of breathless profiles, splashy television ads and Internet gossip.

The first shipments, due Tuesday, are already sold out. Analysts are calling it this year's hot holiday gift.

Don't believe the hype — and don't buy the Xbox 360.

Oh, it's an amazing console, don't get us wrong. Plugged into a high-definition television set with a booming sound system, it's amazing, a wonderland of sights and music.

But that's the part of the problem. To get the full Xbox 360 experience, you need to spend hundreds — perhaps thousands — of dollars. All that for a machine that won't play the hot games this season, like "Star Wars: Battlefront II" and "50 Cent: Bulletproof."

Save your cash, and skip the frenzy. Here are five reasons you should say "game over" to the Xbox 360:

Price — The Xbox 360 comes in two versions: the hard drive-less "core" system for $299 and the premium package for $399. But those who buy the lower-cost version are in for a surprise — they won't be able to play any of the Xbox games they already own.

"A lot of parents who go out and buy the $300 system, because they can't afford the $400 system, will have kids who aren't going to able to play 'Halo' or 'Halo 2' because backwards compatibility is going to be on the hard drive," says Brian D. Crecente, editor of kotaku.com, a gaming news blog.

Lack of games — Microsoft has announced there will be 200 backwards-compatible games (including "Forza Motorsport" and "Halo 2"), but only 19 launch titles for the 360. Only a handful are exclusives.

And popular new games, like "50 Cent: Bulletproof" and "The Warriors," won't play on the 360 at all.

Douglass Perry, editor in chief of the Xbox channel on IGN, says, "If you can wait, the second wave of games [due next year] are going to give developers the chance to really show us next-generation gaming in the truest sense."

No competition — Sure, you could rush out and drop hundreds on the 360, but we have no idea what the next-gen PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Revolution are going to be capable of doing. Both of those systems are due next year, and will surely spark a mini-price war with the Xbox 360.

Hidden costs — Right now, the Xbox 360's stunning graphics ability is its biggest selling point, but to take advantage of it, you'll need to invest in a high-definition TV — tacking on an extra couple hundred bucks, at least.

"We've all heard Microsoft basically saying that if you want to get an HDTV, the 360 is going to be the thing that makes you go out and get one," Crecente says. "Most of us dismissed that, but I swear, it's like they designed the 360 to make your TV look bad if you don't have HDTV."

And if you add peripherals, such as the ability to play games over the Internet, the Xbox 360 costs nearly $600!

Older consoles are not dead yet — Both the original Xbox and the PS2 are selling for $149, with the GameCube coming in at a mere $99 — in all cases, a complete steal compared to the Xbox 360.

You could take the money you saved and put it towards buying all the systems, plus a whole bunch of great games like "The Warriors."

Although he's a firm believer in the Xbox 360, Perry says, "If you buy a PS2 or an Xbox now, you're buying a system at the end of its lifespan, when some of the best games are showing up."

i played it last night at best buy its DAMN awesome...I agree on the HDTV thing they had one playing on a regular tv and one on a mini HDTV and the HDTV it looked ALOT better....i was playing battle front or w/e that battle game is, AWSOME graphics....anyways im not really into games as i usto be just give me PS2 and GT4 and ill be happy.

Yeah Nintendo 64 and Mario Kart is an all time classic. When you play it with friends, its probably one of the funniest and most competive games ever lol.

well as a video game creater...the x box 360 has opened a whole new world up for my carrer. do some carparsion...ok grand trismo 4 car have a poly count of maybe 20 at most maybe 30 (pushing it) polygons...with the new x 360 project gotham racing 3 will have 80 or 120 polygons for interior and exterior...btw thats not including the city that the cars run in...thats a whole hell of a lot more...the more polys the more ur gonna have to have a bad a$$ system.....i think its stupid to being rasing the price to but the ps3 will be 400 bucks to but sony will have the backwards game feature but what im getting at...this is making opening up the game industry to bigger and better things...

and that my friend is why I will and shall remain waiting for the PS3!!!

Every new system starts out like this. Anyone who's lived through a couple system wars knows that. The HDTV arguement holds no water b/c Sony & Nintendo will recommend the same thing. Useless article.

Yeah the controllers do suck. I played the xbox 360 the other day, it looks to me like most of the games are just ps2 and xbox engines running on xbox 360 hardware, in other words, the same game only with better graphics. I was expecting completely new and different games. For example, NBA 2K6, same moves, same models, same gameplay only with better graphics, that's it, no new cutscenes, not ONE new feature was introduced in that game. Maybe because of the fact that with this new hardware a lot of developers don't have time to work with it, but come on, Is the exact same game only with better graphics, i was expecting a lot more. I'll just wait for the PS3 and GT5 :D

Xbox controllers are awesome for racing games, the triggers are ALOT easier to modulate brake and accel then the gay PS2 sensative button crap...if Xbox would get better games and more games then it would be better, as long as GT is with PS2 I'm with PS2, I still do like Xbox though.

I picked up a X-box 360 and honesty it is intense. The graphics for Perfect Dark are unreal. NFSMV also looks amazing compared to the regular X-box, and I am playing it on a regular tv with just the S-video component cables. Also I played Halo 2 on my 360, and the game looks 2 times better. The graphis are a lot more crisp and clear. Amazing system. Can't wait to see what Sony's PS3 can do.

project racing 3 is sick saw it 2day playing and wow its went there....so GT5 got some work to do to catch up...things to expect a ****pit mode in gt5....

I am a PC Gamer. I hate the xbox, and any version of that console ever to be produced. I love sony for their innovation; Nintendo likewise. PC Gaming is where its at though... You simply cant enjoy FPS's on a damn controller. Mouse and Keyboard FTW.

if you guys want a good laugh head over to ebay and look up an xbox 360 and go through the listings...

20 to 30 polys? Are you sure?

I did a game design course a while back and 20 to 30 polygons doesnt seem nearly enough to cover the detail I see in GT4.
