Joon Woo Maeng at Formula Drift round 5 Evergreen Speedway
The 1,200 mile trip to Seattle was awesome! Departed Glendale Ca. on Tuesday, August 4th around 11 P.M. and got to Monroe, WA by Wednesday 7:25 P.M. Driving straight for 21 hours was fun.
I went to pick up Kyu Kwon ( http://blog.dreamwiz.com/beetle69 ) in Glendale and did a quick interview with Jay and his wife for the local Korean television. What a surprise, totolly unexpected.
Fuel @ the truck stops has a better price. I saved a good amount by making stops at the travel centers for the road trip.
This is what Evergreen Speedway looks like behind the huge bleachers.
Thursday, August 6th 2009.
Arrived at Evergreen Speedway in the morning to setup and prepare for practice. Made good amount of driving notes and LSauto adjustments to the car in preparation for the qualifying runs. Taka Aono and Mike Essa were my neighbors for the weekend. I like to display my supporters' brochures, business cards, stickers, etc. to show my appreciation and to share with drift fans the information about the amazing products and services.
Great race fans! Last year the Evergreen Speedway fans got wet from the rain and didn't even move from their seats on the bleachers. Hardcore crowd!
During Thursday's practice I had a small accident with Drift Alliance brother Vaughn Gitten Jr. I tried to stop in time but ended up hitting his door coming off the high speed band after the transition. I was happy that no major damages were sustained.
Met some Korean race fans. They were suprised to see a Korean driver.
There was such a big crowd that I didn't have much time to eat or drink . Ended up talking to hundreds of amazing fans. Placed 17th out of 31 drivers during Friday's qualifying.
One young fan enjoyed sitting in the S13.5 and I gave him a quick drift 101 lesson.
I didn't know fans were listening to what I had to say from the back.
Kids were adorable! They didn't even want candy, instead they wanted to see the car more than anything. I was very happy to hear and see that!
Explaining the S13.5 inside and out.
Signed and gave around 1,300 new hero-cards I made.
Now answering some questions from the race fans.
Signing tires and having a blast meeting new friends!
I'm still amazed at how the car handles with the LSautomotive/CFR setup! Of course I couldn't have done it without the right products like MAXXIS Tires, DG-5 suspension, TOMEI, APEXi, ACT, Mishimoto, ENJUKU Racing, MA-Motorsports, etc.
Having an awesome time driving on my favorite race track!
Saturday, August 8th
Again, started the day early in preparation for the Top 32 battle. The grandstand was packed with race fans and talked to hundreds of them in my pit area. I was up against Robbie Nishida for Top 16. As chaser, attempted to keep up and, as leader, made the mistake of giving him the opportunity to make a pass after I rode the high bank and made a wide transition. He ended up advancing to the next round. It was a great battle and I’m looking forward to doing better in Sonoma! Thank you for your support, I appreciate it very much!
