Knocking

Well, i was driving my car on i75 and i was revving it up to high rpms for the first time since the sr swap.. and now its making a knocking noise.. coming from the top.. probably has to do with not having rocker arm stoppers.. well since ill be taking all that upper section apart im gonna wait a little and buy stage 2 hks cams.. any suggestions on what else i should change??? or if theres better cams??

ps. i got an s14 with an s14 blacktop.. full exhaust, stage 3 clutch, walboro fuel pump..

First tell me this, what are your horsepower goals and what kind of turbo will you be upgrading to.

And step 2 cams from HKS REQUIRE you to change your valve springs and retainers. Competition springs are proven as are Crower (not Brian Crower) Ti retainers. I've been running them for over a year myself with higher lifting cams than step 2 HKS.

yea oil was good... im not upgrading the turbo yet.. as of right now stock turbo.. but yea i read up on the valve springs and the retainers.. is the step 2 cams safe with the stock turbo??

what type of tuning? air or fuel?? i got an apexi avcr and a turbo timer for right now, i dont know if i wanna go to deep into changing things cuz my budget is limited due to christmas  but i guess i should at least put in a metal head gasket

im also running stock injectors and stock MAF.. are they a must to upgrage??

yes but u need tune, if your going stage 2 cam, then upgrade the whole head and some kind of tuning system

Not on a MAF you don't.

OK, I wouldn't bother upgrading cams until you have a bigger turbo lined up. At least not that extreme of a cam setup. You're not going to be able to take advantage of them and your powerband will shrink. Fuel is a must have for any s14sr engine owner since you are only limited in boost by lack of fuel. I would recommend some 550's, z32 maf, and an Enthalpy tune. That should get you close to 300 by turning up the boost. Cams - maybe a set of 256/264 step 2's like Mattback's setup.

Here's a thread with his dyno @ 6psi w/ fuel, cams, enthalpy tune, and z32 maf. Mind you, he's revving so high since he's replaced his hydraulic lash adjusters with solid tappets (and of course has done springs and retainers since he's using high lift cams). With the valve springs and retainers, you should be able to rev to 8k no problem. Anyway: http://forums.freshalloy.com/showthread.php?t=159369
