if you do it in the car. you have to keep the cylinder full of compressed air to prevent it from droping. you also have to get a more specialized tool that bolts to the head that can compres the springs vs just the bug C clamp one... as for the retainers i have seen this tool that you just push the spring and it at the same time... but really the only way that i have been taught and know is with some greese and a small flat head. the greese on the retainer so it will stick to the valve. gl hope that made sense.
in all honesty taking the head off is the easiest way imo.
