2 neo or not to neo. put in your 2 cents

i'm look'n to make a safe 300hp in my s13. and slide dat beeach.
i have a red top/ gt28rs .i'm about to buy a MAF and install a apexi neo but i want to hear what you guys think. neo or stand alone perhaps a halteck / apexi power fc . give me your feed back, what you guys are running or suggestions? pros and cons of each?
 
go standalone man. you can tune it properly. safc is cool and all but you cant get into too much detail. 300 bucks for a neo just save up and get ems or power fc whatever tickles your pickle
 
an awesome alternative u did not mention was a rom tune. from enthalpy, jwt or best yet xat racing on the dyno for 500-600 hundred and each retune is cheap after that. xat racing in tampa will do the rom tune specific for your car and your conditions so its perfect. but if you have 1200 plus dyno fees than i would deff reccamend the aem ems or power fc. i have 0 experience when it comes to haltech and theres not many people that can tune on that system which sucks. do not buy any afc crap its not a tune its shitty bandaid.
 
Power FC Has been having great success in the SR World - I got one for my S13 but I havent installed it yet (still building engine) but Ive read nothing but good things - Haltech is just as good if not better - but if im not mistaken You have to rewire and do a bit of tuning from scratch (I think) but either are good solutions - dont get an SAFC.. save a few more bux and get an EMS (POWER FC = $856 with commander)

if you don't want a neo, i would go rom tune, at 300hp there's really no need for a standalone, unless you have the 800-1200.00 to throw down on one and really plan to keep changing up your set-up more than a few times. enthalpy tunes i've read have come within 5hp of aem etc. it all depends on what you want, how much money you have, and if there are future plans for extra upgrades etc. :bigthumbu also with the standalone you need someone who knows how to tune it you dont want to mess up a value and pop your motor. :ugh:
 
Im assuming this is on a sr20det.

300 horsepower is definitely obtainable with an safc with a turbo computer. If it were a ka, I would suggest a ROM tune. You definitely do not need a standalone engine management system to accomplish your goals. I have calibrated many engines with safcs and I have tuned quite a few engines with standalone ecu's. You dont need that much flexibility, there will always be things that need to be worked out. There are very few things that are plug n play, most of them are plug N PRAY that they work correctly.

Sileighty boi made 280whp with a t28 hybrid turbo + 550cc injectors + safc for well over a year before he had other engine problems unrelated to the tune.

Talk to your ROM tuners and what options + cost they have to offer. If you do not want to go that route you can always do an safc + dyno tuning (if you dont dyno tune it, its not worth a damn). Keep in mind, safc neo 300$ plus another 150-200 to tune. it could be 500 dollars, IE the cost of a rom tune which is superior to a safc in this situation.

Consider the sources you trust when making decisions of this nature. You might want to talk to a few tuners and ask what is their suggestion. Good luck.

There are other more sophisticated alternatives then megasquirt for an sr20.
 
Microtech is also a good EMS. I use Microtech on 2 of my cars right now and pretty easy to use after you learn the system, or just have someone else do the tuning.
 
awsome thanks for all the input. well i guess i wont be installing the neo i think reflash is the way for me.
sooooooo any one want to buy my neo:D

can any one recomend a place that does the reflash? i live down south so fynetune is the closest to me but i like to shop around.
