Backyard paint jobs?

I know people have done it before, but I'm curious how many of you have done it. A paint job in your backyard, driveway, garage/shop, barn... you get the point. Anything other than a paint booth. How did it come out? What did you cover the area up with? Pics? I want to do this since I don't have the $$ to dish out for a paint job but I need shelter and/or a couple days without rain. I have plenty of material to sand, bondo, and paint but no location. I've done plenty of body work on yachts at my old job, so I have that aspect covered, I'm not going to paint a half assed body and have all the imperfections show. Also, I'm not talking about Hialeah, rattle can/paint roller paint job that was just flopped up together in 3 hours, I'm talking real work.

If anyone knows of a place that would also rent out a booth/shop/yard I don't care, that doesn't mind a little dust LMK. I may consider that over what I can do at home. Near Broward please.

If anyone has anything to post that is pointless, flaming, or plain fanboy stupidity, keep it to yourself, and go let off that energy on lemonparty.org

-Mods- If there is a more appropriate place for this thread, please move it. I didn't know where else I could have posted this besides the Off Topic board.

plywood on ground. two sheets with enough area around to keep jumping critters off the fresh paint. buy an $80-$120 tent with sides.

i have sprayed several cars in my garage its not going to be perfect but they come out fine most people wouldn't even know.

just get plastic 1mm drop cloths and make a both around the car and spray.

all three of these cars were sprayed in a garage/storage unit. if you did it out side expect more debris to get in the paint but the red car and the grey cars both had their aero hoods and fenders sprayed in my back yard with nothing to protect them.

Damn in a storage unit? Shit, they didn't give you hell? I'm not looking for perfection, I just want to improve the look of the car, because right now, its a mixture of black/grey primer, red, and surface rust. :( And if I could make space in my garage, I wouldn't even post this, but living with 6 other people makes that impossible. The rain hasn't made things easy either, I have a free spot to to work, but its an unpaved construction storage yard with no power. So I would have to build a shelter, and buy/rent a generator and prey to god my shit didn't get stolen. But I may also consider painting piece by piece too... Depends on what happens after next week.. (possible double OT if I get approved to cover someones shift for his vacation)

Those cars do look nice, definitely something I would like to see from my car.

anymore pictures and info of that first one??? im in the same situation. i have a access to a compressor and gun just dont know if i should doit in my garage, and weather to do single stage or 2 stage..

dont have anymore pics of it only lasted one week like that then my gf at the time backed into it leaving in the morning and it became the red car. but what info do you want? its single stage purple firemist.

the storage unit was someplace that let us work on the cars in there in delray.

Why? Because I don't want to pay 2k for good body work and paint, when I can do it myself. And the fact that I can keep my car and not lose my only car for a week (or more) for someone to paint it. I know how to prep and paint, but don't have a good location.

I'm also not paying more than the car is worth to get it painted. Why pay so much for "doing it right" when it's just a stockish 86 fc???

awesome i wish you had more pictures of it but it looks really good. and i wasnt sure if i wanted single or 2 stage but im starting to lean toward single until i get better. any advice in prepping and all that.

Why not just do it right the first time? There's just shit you shouldn't cheap out on.
right would be a 3 stage 4k paint job. but im actually going to drift my car and im not going to spend 1k on my first drift cars paint. i want to paint it and if it doesn't come out good im still stoked i did it and in 2 months ill redo it.

and leo ive seen your build you cheaped out on important shit that if it broke it would fuck up the car. if anything paint is least important unless you just care about how the car looks not drives.

1. Just go for a single, the others cost more, involve more work, and is only worth it if you want a show car finish. IMO Single is what many cars get unless they want to throw some serious $$ for all the extra work.

2. Wash the car well before working on it. Sanding a dirty car can imbed dirt/grease/crap into the surface and show in the finished product if not handled correctly.

Always go through the grits when sanding, skipping grits to save time will end up in putting more effort to get sanding marks down and waste more time and paper.

Wipe down the car with a cleaner solution to get dust and other impurities out before spraying. Change rags constantly, using a dirty rag will just spread crap around. I recommend wiping with a tack rag before top coating.

Properly cover up everything you don't want overspray on, if you don't, expect it to get paint on it.

Also, when you tape up the car, clean or tape up places that can blow shit back like headlight buckets, cracks in body lines, the grill. Anything that is in those areas that gets blown back will get shit all over your wet paint, so you don't want to risk your paint job from shitty prep work.

If you have to use bondo, try to pull the metal out (if possible) before adding 50 pounds of clay to the car.

Check the adhesion of the old paint if you are not going to prime. Poor adhesion of old paint will = poor adhesion of new paint. So, if paint is flaking off in some areas, I suggest sanding to the next best layer, or sanding to bare metal and priming. You can also get some paint stripper to chemically remove paint if you have to remove a lot if it.

good info yeah i figured it was the processes and i learned the hard way not to skip grits. my kit is all new so im just going to scuff that but everything is sanded for the most part just waiting on fenders. but you can get nice 2 stage paint for 300. does anyone have a preference in what paint brand is good for single stage? id be cool if more people posted pics of cars they painted or got painted.

My car always gets painted in a dirty old shop. After you finish all the body work and mask everything off, shut the shop/garage up, and go home. Come back next day, don't open any doors, other than to fit yourself into shop/garage, lightly blow the car off/hit with tack cloth, then start painting. Always comes out pretty decent for me.

I agree on that but in this case it doesn't really work. At the same time IDK what's his purpose with his (al0389) car. Example.. Pat spent $200-$500 bucks on one of his cars to get painted, just to get the job done (Correct me if im wrong about Pat's car). His statement was why spend 1k or more on a paint job if he was going to drift his car and probably wall tap or crash in the events he was participating in? Because he didn't want to dish out money on an expensive paint job now to cry about it later and have to repay another $1,000 bucks to get the car back to square one.

My input on this.. If your going to drift your car and not care what happens to the car then yes get some a "cheap" paint job so it won't hurt you later. But if your going to be HARDPARKED like Leo then spend the money and get the car painted nicely.

..to the Leo statement...YES I DID!

current process of my rattle can job... it isnt perfect at all... but its going to work for me as a drift car... and its expensive rattle can shit too. 2 layers of grey primer... one layer of black primer, 2 layers of rustoleum color change paint and 2 layers of clear. It is far from perfect but it works for me. Has some spots that didnt turn out perfect and some spots that dripped for some reason. Whatever

dude that sounds like a lot of money just in materials for a can job that color change shit is expensive. how much did you spend just in paint for the whole car?

The car was originally a drift/project car and I had a daily. I got fucked at school, and got kicked out mid paint job thanks to a selfish, scumbag teacher. So I was left with a car that was barely primed, and over the last year that it was hard parked, grew some rust on the surface through the primer. I already have the paint, and thinner, and shit to paint it, and I want the car to be red again, and presentable to drive daily since I lost my Sc300. Paint doesn't have to be perfect, but I don't want to be driving around a rust/red/grey rx7. It's ugly as fuhhh...

Rodd, car is fucking sexy... I've always liked your car, I didn't know you did a backyard job... Nice, and kudos to you. How big is your compressor?
