Can a J30 be welded?

as stupid as this question may be, i can't find the answer to it anywhere.

my coupe came with a J30 vlsd w/ the beefier 5 bolt axles and it locks ok but it's not as aggressive as i want it to be. and i don't have the moneys for a clutch type lsd yet.

so is it possible? or am i better off getting a stock s13 diff and getting it welded?

not really sure what the benefits/downsides are with all these different difs:confused:
gear ratio, how strong they are... etc..

someone enlighten me. please!

The answer to that is YES.

U have to remove the gear plenum and get to the little vacumm line in there. Plug the vacumm line and weld the plenum shut. It should over heat causing the viscus LSD to lock up almost instantly. It's tough but well worth it. Don't go welded. THIS IS MUCH EASIER AN LESS TIME CONSUMING!

BUT IT IS POSSIBLE, not impossible....

damn now i feel REALLY stupid.

okay so i lied. i got lazy and didn't even try googleing for answers. just spent 3 minutes on google and got every answer i needed ^_^.

anybody want a J30 :bigthumbu?

damn i just realized i have a 5 bolt j30. does this mean i'm gonna need to change out the 5 bolt axles back to stock s13 axles? or is there a beefier setup that i can get?

yea if u wanna go back to the 6 bolt diff. nothing really gets more beefier than welded for drifting unless u get a 2way.

when i said beefier i meant as in the axles. from what i've been told, the 5 bolt j30 axles are beefier and stronger than stock s13 axles.
 
you can get an open diff internal carrier, weld it and replace it with the vlsd carrier.

This is exactly what i had to do for my z32 which is vlsd stock as well.

and i'm guessing the carrier goes INTO the pumpkin?

will an s13 carrier fit into a j30 pumpkin?

Yes and yes, they are all the same model called an R200, s13,s14,q45,z32,j30 are all interchangable with different gear ratios, axles and covers.
