Charging Problems

well motor runs and drives good but noticed the alt isent charging the batt... swapped the alt same problem .went to discount check both alts and there both good .got a new batt still does the same thing.. car is a 89 coupe sohc auto swapped to a 95 ka24de 5 speed... anyone know whats up? also the egi relay buzzes at times when i turn the car off even with key out of the ignition ... does one thing have to do with the other?

im taking it to the shop on monday so i want to have some knowledge of whats going on..


im thinking ground from the alt or connection between the alt and batt
 
how do u know its not charging the battery. did u test to make sure its charging or are you just saying its not cuz ur batt dies after a while? you need to connect a multimeter to the battery leads while the car is on. 14-15v is what is should read. turn the car off batt should read 12.6v. if that shows up good then the alt isnt your problem. do a parasitic draw test. now if the first test shows less than 14 the alt is putting out enough. then your gonna wanna test the cables and connections going to the alt and coming back for excessive resistance.
 
theres a gray 75A fuse in the engine bay fuse box. it says ALT. make sure its good.

also do your interior lights, brake/tail lamps, and guages work??

well i disconnect the neg off the batt and the car turns off.. i put a multimeter to the batt it reads 12's ronch did that and he tought it was weird... then he tried the alt read the same thing 12's

i had the same prob in my eclipse and was a ground cable loose.
 
all lights work and gagues too only the speedometer wich is digital dont turn on
was the dash original to the car? did you take it out? might be that a wiring that goes to the dash has no ground and that is why it wont turn on and it drains the battery

i think it was changed. the dash was swapped im guessing the digital dash was swapped as well **edited** the batt dies with the car on...

first of all never disconnect the cables when the car is running it puts a big strain on the alt. and if its reads 12s at the alt then start checking cables make sure nothing is loose and check resistance in cables and connections. see whats happening is that the field coil isnt getting strong enough to produce the voltage necessary or there is resistance in the charge cable knocking down the voltage in that cable. check the grounds and all cables going in and out

i know there is cables together that are just there cut, some going to the relay box ,there are 3 connections together that are right next to the box and one under the box wich go to the line of cables that dont go anywhere i folow them and they lead to cut cables

check voltage drop across the connections and find out what the cut cables are for. if the excessive then its time to make a better connection or better yet replace. if the cut cables are of no use then seal the ends with electrical tape on a wire cap. air itself causes a lot of resistance.

ok those would be for the tranny. looks like your car used to be auto then. those can be left alone. and whats with all the wires coming out of the relay box? do have a switch or controller for the pop ups?

my lights pop up and down .i had a problem with them going down but it was the light switch on the column everything works lights in and out of the car its just the alt not charging the batt... car runs great but revs pretty slow
