In his Rookie season of Formula Drift, Daigo Saito takes home the championship. He fought his was to several podiums and ultimately knocked out Rhys Millen to take home the 2012 Formula Drift Championship.

Do you think this opens the door for more drifters from across the world to come to FD. Not just Japan, but Europe, NZ, etc.

there use to be a lot more drifters from japan in formula d but why would they spend the money to have the judges choose to let the good old boys win

Wrong. There were a lot of battles where Daigo should have not won. Let's go back to Wall Speedway in New Jersey and look at the battle between Daigo and Conrad Grunwald. Conrad was super clean, hit all his marks none to very little mistakes. Daigo on the other hand was sloppy, ran over clipping points, and had 4 tires off track, and he still won because of "proximity."

We don't even have to look back too long ago when he should have not won against Matt Field in Irwindale. He did nothing better than Field. Should have been a 2nd OMT, but the judges wanted the championship battle to go to the wire.

So, at the end of the day, it's not about if you are a good ol' boy or not, it's about who is bringing in the money to the series. Daigo created a lot of preseason hype, and as the events went on he became more and more controversial. He had the 2JZ making over 1,000 hp and he was from Japan, so everyone was riding the Daigo dick. He created ticket sales, so Formula D needed him to keep winning to keep the crowd to stick around. If Daigo decides to leave Formula Drift next season, I can almost guarantee ticket sales will drop. I think Daigo is a gangster driver, but let's all be honest, if you stuck around to watch every single battle, you know he didn't win all of them.

Next year things will be interesting. I predict that there will be quite a few more cars with 1,000 hp or more. Teams will be looking into ways of making efficient power with turbos (NOS and antilag mostly). I also believe a lot more international drivers coming over to give FD a hell of a show (I hope Hibino, Imamura and Orido decide to come over).
