differentials!!1

ok well i saw that theres a thread about suspension and they touch a little about lsd's and well they where some that i want to know for exmaple
1. a Welded diff.
2. Open Diff.
i just want to suck in as much info about lsd's before i buy one...so if any one can just break this down for me i would really appriciate it ! Not only will this help me but others in the future :bigthumbu

open, one wheel spin at one time
welded, both wheels spins at same time
VLSD uses fluid to lock both wheels so they can spin
LSD vary from 1.5 to 2 way, many people say 2 way are like welded

However lsd use clutches to lock wheels to spin, usually depends on 1.5 and 2 way, both of which i cannot comment on

Open diff = fail
Welded diff = poor amn's easy fix to open diff failage
VLSD (1 way) = better for Auto-x than drifting
1.5 or 2.0 way LSD =FTMFW!!!!!

basically 1 way (Stock) LSD's lock up under acceleration, and open while breaking
2way locks under accelration and breaking
1.5 way lies somewhere in the middle, (always locks in accel. only locks under hard decel)

This might help more...

k well i loved me my welded diff. i rocked that shit out for like 3 years.

if your broke and want to slide i would get the welded. for sure. its not as bad as people think. if you want to spend a bit more money get a vagina diff. its just the lockup sucks ass and transitions are sorta violent compared to the welded wich is smooth.

if you really want to spend some dough go for the 2 way. this is what i have in there now with a 4.36 final. this shit is great. highway speeds went to shit but the dig out of the hole went up like crazy. and responce is out of controll.

so its 2way>welded>open diff>vlsd in that order. fuck a vlsd. garbage.

I'm not been sarcastic. I seen you around and by this post I know that you know a lot about diffs, but I would like to hear your side on the VLSD just as your opinion if you had any experience with the VLSD and why you think like that...

Thanks

PS. Sorry but J30 is???? VLSD or LSD!!!

yea ive had the vlsd. it was the first diff i installed into my car. it was great for a lil while then bam. broke. k next one same shit bam broke, next on bam broke. so i gave up on them damn things.

as far as drifting with a vlsd is ok at best. i felt like the transitions like during a manji or like going from turn to turn felt a bit harsh. when i went welded it all got soo much smoother. it was great. i loved my welded and still do have one for when this 2way needs to be serviced.

if i was going to go spend money on my first diff again i would just do the welded.

j30/z32/hicas=vagina(v)lsd

Limited Slip Differentials (LSD)

Open Differential: one wheel wonder, good for grandmas and groceries

Viscus Limited Slip Differential(VLSD): think torque converter, there is no "lock up" here, its friction or heat sensitive and will "push" the wheel facing greater resistance close to the torque out put at the wheel facing smaller resistance but will not match(lock up) as there is no physical or mechanical direct link. good for DD.

Helical Limited Slip Differential: S15, does "lock up" if both wheels stay in contact with the ground. I'm sure its too expensive to bother.

Clutch Type Limited Slip Differential: three types, severity of lock up is based on number of clutch plates.
1-way lock up under acceleration, open differential behavior under engine braking, for rotation in tight corners.
1.5-way lock up under acceleration, with less than lock up under engine braking
2-way lock up under acceleration, lock up under engine braking

"Welded Diff" same idea as a drag racing spool, both wheels turn together always, very hard on the drive line, very abusive to tires as one wheel is always breaking traction in any amount of turning. As far as drifting is concerned this will always be the most consistent rear end you can use. buy stronger wheel studs.

My recomendations:
If you daily drive you drift car, save up for a 2-way, if you don't weld it.
And don't for get to change fluid in all of these, or kiss it good bye.

Unless you want a 1 way diff that's low on maintenance, locks hard, makes no noise, and is totally streetable.

Because Snot is for noses not Diff's

so ive seen that its between welded and 2 way lsd... but the welded has one tire breaking??? wtf? and wat 2way would you guys suggest?
