Car coordinator Dennis McCarthy told us that Director Justin Lin liked the S15 Nissan Silvias in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift so much that he insisted one be included in Fast & Furious. That's despite the fact that the car was never sold in America. OK, fine.
So the picture car department found one S15 over here already wearing a body kit, bought that car and dressed it up a bit more for the shoot. Though mechanically stock (even the SR20DET under the hood was unmodified), it looked solid when decorated and was assigned to the character "David Park," played by actor Ron Yuan.
Because S15s are exceedingly rare here in America, the four replicas were actually built from S14-generation Nissan 240SX coupes (the last Silvia exported to America). Clever use of fiberglass noses and tails made the 240SX resemble the true S15. Later reshoots required the picture car department to build two more S15 replicas for a crash sequence. None of the replicas got an SR20 upgrade.
Even though the S15 is one of the four cars in the film's largest race, its screen time is limited since it wrecks mere seconds into the sequence. Still, of the seven total Silvias used by the film, only one survives. That's the original S15 and it's in storage.
yeah i feel you... I did an movie analisys for an asian film class on tokyo drift.. and danm all the cars had the power to back up their tools :O.. they spend more money on building real cars and real drifting than paying the actors LOLle sigh! see what i mean.
yeah i thought that from all the possible cars they could have picked... they go ahead and pick a friggin evo....... *sigh* is cool tha rhys got some work but still they should have thought about using more exotics cars or at least let him drive the Rx7 at the end... that was such a sad , sad scene... even the people that built the car where extremelly sad and depressed after they had to destroy a perfectly good looking one of kind ride ...yea they actually did there homework (a bit) on this one and didnt just be like hey paul, heres another skyline but instead of going fast you have to yank the ebrake around every corner...i didnt like the fact the evo was the main car, and honestly it would have been more hardcore if instead of a mustang he had an old 270 datsun...its fking tokyo and your telling me he manages to find the one mustang in the city -_-
they were sad and depressed because of how much it cost to put it together lol. i say fast and the furious 5 should be about wangan and time attack
