The Lost Rally
The word lost was a major topic of discussion during Round #3 of the Florida RallyCross Championship this past Sunday April 30th as many competitors seemed to loose their way on the tight and challenging course laid out at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.
A welcomed brisk breeze out of the North-East kept the temperatures down and the dust from the paddock as dry conditions caused the cars to kick up huge dust clouds on the course.
As the first runs of the day started timing and scoring was barraged with radio “Off Course†radio calls as the drivers had a hard time following the tight and twisty course designed by Paul Easy and Bob Ricker. Even the most experienced RallyCross drivers had to humbly admit that they got lost. After the chaos of the 1st run the drivers quickly learned the layout and the competition became quickly heated.
In M4 (Modified AWD) Winston Crosbie II in his Subaru WRX set a quick time for the 1st run of 2:35.4 which was soon answered by Mike McIntosh on his 2nd run with a 2:32.4 in his Subaru Impreza.
Winston came right back with a 2:27.0 on his 3rd run but them Mike slammed the door shut with two identical runs of 2:24.0 in runs 4 & 5 to take the M4 class with a combined time of 12:28.2 followed 3.6 seconds behind by Winston with Dunker Felix coming in 3rd.
In PF (Prepared FWD) The VW Golf of Alfonso Lopez rebounded from 2 slow times in his first to runs to take top honors with a combined time of 13:34.2. Jorge Valdeveizo in his VW GTI fell back to 2nd 4.2 seconds behind after setting the best times of the first two runs. Bryn Walters set the fastest time of the day in his class with a 2:33.6 in is Ford Focus but could not recover from his 3 minutes + times in his first two runs.
Greg Soutar took the SA (stock AWD) trophy with a time of 13:51 over Jonathan Godinez in his recently acquired Subaru WRX who finished with a time of 14:38.4.
Less than one and a half minutes separated the seven cars that made up the SF (Stock FWD) class with Nicholas Martinez taking the win in his Mitsubishi Mirage with a combined time of 14:01.2. Stephen Murcoch finished 2nd with his Mazda MX3 followed by Brian Lepak with event head Paul Easy finishing 4th in his Nissan Sentra.
Link Eveleth continued his domination of the SR (stock RWD) class finishing a minute and a half ahead with a 14:27.6. taking his 3rd straight victory. This was not as easy as it looked as Link did his runs with his Honda S2000 instead of his usual Porsche. To add to the difficulty he was using DOT race tires gave no grip, as they were almost slicks.
Only two cars entered the PR (prepared RWD) class and Chris Cassle in his Nissan 240SX cruised to a well-earned victory over James Lantz by over a minute and a half.
Once the dust settled the competitors relaxed and enjoyed a door prize raffle with prizes donated by The South Florida Motorsports Report. Allure Elegant and Comcast cable.
Round #4 of the Florida RallyCross Championship is scheduled for Sunday June 25th at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.
