Focusing while photographing

Just had a question for the more experience guys, when you are photographing drift events do you use auto focus or manual focus. I have always used auto but now im reading manual is way better. Curious to your thoughts on this.

im no pro but i have experimented with manual focus. The hard part of it is setting the distance right. you have to pick a point in which you feel youll get the best picture. then focus at a distance in which the car will be when it passes by that spot. and then attempt to get the picture you want. I found that auto focus is the way to go because it gives you more options.

Depends on focal length and your depth of field. I'm not a pro either but if you want to do something super specific then Manual is going to be your best bet but if you are doing general action I personally thow my body on continuous auto focus and pick a single AF point based on how I want the shot framed then pan with the subject and snap when I like the framing.

I used to put the shutter on continuous and let it snap away but I get alot more keepers if I shoot on single drive.

I've been manually focusing for a while now. But sometimes I'll switch on AF and pick a point and pan. Especially at some of the FD events because they're going so fast, you literally don't have time to focus.

Yeah seems like picking a spot and auto focusing is the best bet. Thanks. I'm trying to get more focused shots cause so far i just been winging it at events with the focusing lol.

more focus = manual. you can focus in on what you want not what the camera wants

yeah i been meaning to invest in a monopod, just curious have you tried to shot with film out there before? Im thinking of doing this next at the next event.

I have though about busting out my Canon film..but yea price of film and processing just isnt worth it..Now I am looking into a adapter for my 7D and my old glass.
