fuel gauge

The other day on my way to work i noticed the fuel gauge on my 240 starting going to full. It was at half a tank...its been 2 days and its still at full lol. Is it a grounding wire that maybe came loose? and where can i find it?

Its most likely just stuck in the full position. I think zak had the same problem on one of his s14's I dont remember what he did to correct it though. You could pull the fuel pump plate and sender and see if the float lever is stuck.

The gauge now starts dropping from F when im at only 1/4 tank. Right now my tank is almost empty according to my trip...but my needle started coming down from F and is now sitting at the middle:confused: So I took off the plate today to see if it was a bad ground maybe (didnt have enough time on my lunch break to check the floater) All the connections look good. im now thinking it might be the gauge itself or the floater/sender that you guys said. Also my fuel light would never come on before, even when i almost ran out of gas while driving before the problem happened, when i would mess around with one of the connectors it would light up.

So i filled up my tank today, the needle went back up but ive noticed now that whenever my tank is full the needle doesn't go past the F line...it stops before it, i thought this was normal till i saw that the needle can actually go way past the F line eitherway i really need to check out the floater before i can say its the gauge thats messed up

Ok started to do this today, i took out what looked like a big red capsule? and while i was reaching around for it i noticed it was just floating around, wasn't really latched to anything. is that normal or very bad? anyway im assuming this is the floater as i found the fuel pump latched onto the wall (pulled it out too). i reconnected the wires from the floater and moved it up and down while having the ignition on and watching the gauge, seems like its working also now my fuel light is on (it never turned on before even when i would almost run out of gas) So im guessing what caused thw problem was that the floater was just floating around not mounted to anything...where do i mount it?
