The buzz around the pits Saturday night after the event is going to get some people really fired up we think. Judging that the other post about this topic “Tanner Foust’s Scion tC Protested at Formula D Seattle” has turned into a storm on our site we can imagine this one will get people going just as much.
After the event was over and people were packing up for home the rumor around the pits was that Tanner Foust’s Scion was said to be out of the clear but Formula D is still in an ongoing investigation with the car and it appears he will be docked points/fined (some sort of punishment for rule violation) regardless of Randy’s statement to us that the car is a closed case.
While the Toyota Supra MKIV sub frame is a blatant rule violation it is unclear how they received permission to do this in the off season or if they did receive proper permission at all. The car has gone through tech at some points this year and we aren’t really sure why the car was not flagged or stopped then but it looks like we will just have to sit around and see what happens.
Any docking of points will not affect Tanner Foust’s inability to win a third championship this year since he is already to far back in the points to make a realistic run for the championship in 2009. The other word around the pits is that most teams with the exception of fellow Scion and Hankook drivers are supporting the petition againt Tanner Foust and his Scion tC. We will keep an eye to see if anything breaks in this story before Sonoma in ten days.

i was actually surprised it was even allowed to run for all this time everyone knows scions are FWD. Rules specify that cars have to rwd from factory. ohh well

Then it should goes as far back as to when Gushi was running his Scion the first year as well. The first year Formula D ran they had a guy trying to qualify using a Acura Integra swapped to RWD. I think some of the members remember it, the car was white and still sounded like a Honda. The thing is, after the innagural year of FD in 2004 they made rules saying that no car that was originally FWD was allowed to be in the series competing.

Last year I think it was the Autobacs R34 that was complained about because it had Cefiro front suspension componets.

the integra with rwd swap si a Floridian named Blake Fuller. And the scion is AWD in jp like green said so its allowed to BE rwd only for FD, but the subframe they used/swapped, is the issue.

tru.. didnt know they came awd in Japan. Now that makes more sense. Thanks for clearing that up. :bigthumbu

originally i think the rule was to help keep it the playing field even vs 'engineering' something new and unique. Like making custom mounts and crazy mods to a car.

they want the cars to still be a car, and not full bred race cars... but i could be wrong because those cars are insanely prepped haha

The initial rule for the subeframes and unibody rules were made in the first year of FD after Sam won 3 out of the 4 rounds with his viper competition coupe, which is a tube chassis race car. Its not even based on the factory production car and other teams/drivers were all pissed about that so FD made rules about subframes and such and it has kept alot of really cool cars out of the series, like Alex P's S13 rear subframe AE86, The 69 camaro had some custom tubular sub frames in it to make it handle like a car instead of a land yacht but that was illegal under that law.

But certain cars have worked with the FD guys from the start of the build of the cars (Scions) and supposedly because of their full disclosure are allowed to run even though the cars themselves have about 4 rule violations in just the suspension alone. Where one little change to useing struts from a C34 lural on a R34 instead of the double wishbone setup caused takitori to loose a bunch of points and be fined like 300 buck an event untill it was changed back to double wishbone. And seriously thats not that big of a change when you compare it to whats been done to the scions.

Why cant they just slide whats out there already and stop making ridiculous cars? Its cheaper for the sponsors and better for the sport honestly nobody can argue with that. American drifting has been going to shit slowly.

Ridiculous cars? I mean the Team Orange cars are all AWD chassis that have been made RWD. American Drifting has just really failed on its own accord. The fan base here is nowhere near Japan and we will never really have the fan base that Japan does because we have this wonderful Motorsport called Nascar(I don't like it). I think all the rules is whats killing drifting in the US. The sport is supposed to be about fun not let's make this rule because this guy is winning too much.

the Scion Tc shares a chassis with the JDM and EDM market 2nd Gen Toyota Avensis, Wich in base model in japan is offered in AWD, so technically they are allowed to use the Tc/Avensis Chassis with RWD, but there is speculation now that they arent, and are using a Mk4 Supra Rear Subframe instead of the Avensis One wich they are supposed to be using.

2nd Gen Toyota Avensis for those of you who havent seen it:

From what I heard the TC didn't come awd in Japan, but a car based on the same platform came awd. So they're really reaching.

I <3 this situation sooo much. I hope they throw that thing out.

Not allowed to modify firewall.
