point and shoot are just the little digital cams right or is it just any cam...and i heard it's a good entry level cam...

Might seem kinda small but the XSi uses Sd cards and every other canon camera uses CF cards except for 1d series.

I would've taken the XTi over the XSi just for that fact. No point in having to buy cards all over again.

Not trying to knock you but I think you might have gotten in over your head if you didn't know the difference between a point and shoot and a dslr. What made you want to get a dslr?

Ok, I know what a point and shoot is, but when I asked how the canon was I thought someone would've compared it to a dslr--not a point and shoot. So that's why I asked what he thought a pns was. The xsi is a entry level dslr, so I don't know what you mean I am getting in over my head? We all have to start some where, and this is going to be a hobby. I want a little more control then just a point and shoot offers.

You can have the same controls on a high end p&s like a Canon g-series, NIKON has one too but I can't remember the name.

Dslr's can be pretty expensive in the end. Good lenses will cost more than you paid for the camera body. Tripped can be pricey also, esp when it comes to holding L glass. Flashes and strobes and the triggers for them will add up quickly.

I'm not trying to knock you for your purchase just wanted to shed a little light on this expensive hobby. It can be just as expensive as drifting.

Yea man I know how expensive hobbies can get, I have a skyline, but with my six month old son it seems to be safer/more family oriented.

its a good camera, but i didnt know it took sd cards instead of CF cards, its not limiting just a bit annoying for me, especially if you plan on upgrading your body later to handle better lens. i think you will have fun with it. but like everyone else says it is a very very very expensive hobby. since i got my dslr last year I've already spent well over 2k in camera gear and plan on spending another 2k on another primary camera and some lighting. unless you plan to really be an enthusiastic hobbyist, you're better off with a higher-end p&s. because theres no point in spending well over a grand for equipment if you are never going to get out of auto or P mode, then that would just be wasting money, alot of it, and since you have a kid, thats already expensive. just a heads up. but since you already bought it...

congrats, have fun, take LOTS AND LOTS of pictures. and get out of auto and P mode.

^^ that is sadly what happens to a few people that I know. There are very few people that buy a dslr and stick with the kit lens. They either end up buying alot more stuff or it just sits in the corner. It adds up really quickly esp when you start going with off camera lighting. A friends 2 light trigger setup cost him $200 and that was with cybersyncs. Pocket wizards run over $200 each. Of course there are cheaper ways but then you worry about misfires and reliability.

I think my limit for 2010 is 3k. Just a 7d and 70-200 f2.8IS and I'll be happy for the year.

I started with a point and shoot (what they call SLR-Style) and it had a manual mode....I would highly suggest you start there, but I guess its too late for that.

As usual I agree with everything Hayabusa says in this thread

I've been thinking about picking up a t1i just for shits and giggles. Kinda like a beater camera til I get the 7d. They are so cheap why not. On a side note I got to shoot a 7d in the field and fell in love. I didn't want to give the camera back. I love "commander" mode. I didn't get to play around with the video feature but commader mode and the fps is awesome.
