I think muh headgasket hates me

YOUS TROLLIN!
Driver
Heading up the keys tonight I take a gander down and yet again my temp needle is pegged full hot. I pull off the highway and I have steam pouring from the passenger side. It was extremely dark and could only see steam, nothing spitting out. I can see coolant mist on my valve cover, and can hear it from around the bottom of the engine.

I JUST replaced the thermo with a nismo unit. And the car has been fine until tonight.

Anyhoo, I let the car cool off for about 45 minutes. Got back in to see if it would even out. And the needle went from 1/4 below to full hot in under 3 minutes.

What am I looking at now? I can only think headgasket since pretty much EVERYTHING has been replaced. I dont understand why it would get so hot so fast.

Muffler bearings bro, like I told you.....thanks for calling me at 2am! If I would have known it was you instead of her I would have picked up.....and why the fuck weren't you @ work o_O

it sounds like you DONT, have coolant in your oil, thats the first sign of a blown head gasket. what exactly have you done to the cooling system so far, i suggest pressure testing the cooling system to check for leaks, your thermostat could have been installed wrong?

Tj check the oil. See if there is any discoloration.

Check for a color that looks like cafe con leche. ( coffe and milk )

and also look to see if its like a pepto bismo color.

Also there might be a chance your waterpump is gone.

is the radiator stock? you need to asnwer s13 slides questions and e30's. it maybe be the water pump. but man i sure hope that you didnt toast your head, cause you might just have to change the HG and get the head plained now.

Koyo Rad
nismo thermostat *nipple up when installed*

blinker fluid was just changed :p

i had a similar problem.. just no smoke or w.e coming out.. ill heat withing a minute!!! ... and all i did was take OFF the thermostat.. and now its working fine.. try dat.

yep i think you may have the same problem i have. My rad dosn't flow well at highway speed. I'm getting my rad recored and i hope that solves my problem. Ive replaced everyother part waterpump, thermo, all hoses so ive come to the conclusion it has to be the rad. My headgaskets aren't blown cuz my oils clean and it dosn't smoke at all. so im gettin my rad redone i suggest looking into that or maybe your rad cap.

The oil is a bit dark *overdue for a change* but it doesnt look discolored. We got a flashlight under it and there is alot of residue by the lower rad hose. I am guessing thats where the loss of coolant is coming from. I popped my rad cap and it was almost empty, it took about an entire jug of coolant.

We filled it up, burped the system, and got it home. It took about a 13 minute drive, the needle was just a bit higher than halfway so it is still running hot. Im gonna get some good rad hoses and reflush the entire coolant system again.

change your fucking oil ive been telling you for months!

also do a leak down test on the cylinders. easy way to tell if hg is bad. and turn the car on and smell the exhaust for a sweet smell.

I dont think its the head gasket, I was just expecting the worst. My car doesnt smoke or anything, the oil looks fine, and last time we did a comp test it was very very good.

Guillermo I PROMISE ill get the oil out asap.

FWIW, when I blew my hg I didn't get any discoloration in the oil or water.

Oh and make sure you didn't install your thermostat backwards.

While the car is cold, open radiator cap, and run engine. Watch for air bubbles in the coolant or small floating pockets of oil..... you will only see this stuff after the thermostat has opened and there is current through the radiator. Are your radiator hoses blown up after you make boost? aka compression going into coolant system and over pressurizing the system? are you loosing coolant? If you go to napa they sell a block testing kit, do a little titration to find out if you have hydrocarbons in the coolant (hydrocarbons = burnt exhaust, aka compression). That will tell you cut and dry whether its a head gasket problem. Now your head gasket might not have been the culprit to start, but by pegging the temp gauge it might be an issue now. If you dont ever get circulation in the radiator after it gets up to temp pull your water pump off, if you see fins good if you see 1\4 of what looks like it might have been a fin, then bad.

when i say pockets of oil, i mean specs of oil floating around, little black spots.

When I blew my headgasket on my s2k, no water or discoloration on the oil..it didnt smoke either. It could be a very minimal leak and the coolent is just burning off in the cylinders but not enough to make it smoke.

YAY!!!!!!!! its not the HG. There is a hose DIRECTLY underneath the intake manifold. Its popped a pin sized leak. when we caught it, we only saw a very very very tiny drip every 10 seconds. When the car heats up, it becomes a very fine mist, when the car has been running a while its a full out stream of coolant and steam. I just caught it right now driving downtown. I understand why my radiator is emptying so fast. The puddle was incredible. I put water in it to get my home, now I have to get the hose off *which is in a BITCH of a location* and flush the entire coolant system now.
