ka sputtering! need help.

ok well its a 97 ka w ebay intake. and some ebay catback. problem is .. wen i floor the car it sputters! until like 3k rpm... wen i accelerate the car normal.. it drives normal. i did some research. and ive read it could be anything from fuel filter. to o2 sensor... to timing? even clutch or pressure plate. i just wanna see if anyone here has had a similar or same problem so i just dont wanna go and invest money on tons of parts i dont need. thanx.

edit: also i recently replaced spark plug wires.

Proper gap on plugs?
WHat kind of wires did you buy? I would reccomend something beter than the OE equivalent discount auto wires if you are going to dirve your car aggresively.

Besides that, I would check the fuel delivery. Change your fuel filter (if it's been a while, or if you have never done it), check injectors, the FPR, and the fuel pump.

Check the position of your TPS as well, that could be the problem before you replace all the parts. The FSM has the readings that you should get at closed throttle and wide open.

Also you can check if your injectors are firing by doing this:

Take the cap off the rotor on the distributor - make sure you remember how the cap was positioned.
With the key in the on position - just before start - turn the end of the distributor by hand and you can hear a soft click on each injector as you turn the distributor. Easy way to check that.

I can look up the values on the TPS if you want. You need a multimeter with an Ohm reading to check the positioning.

if u can find the values for me that would be a + :D ty.

Got it. When you take the connector off, make sure you're looking inside it with the clip at the top of the connector. You're going to check the resistance between the leftmost pin and the center pin. At completely closed throttle you should have approximately .5 ohms. At wide open throttle you should have 4.0 ohms. Adjusting it is easy, loosen the (I think 6mm bolts that hold it on) and turn it until you get the appropriate reading - if you can't get it right then you need to replace it.

Let us know how it works!

PM me your email address and I'll send you a .pdf of the FSM.

I had a similiar problem on my AE86 GT-S...
I dunno shit bout KAs but like my 4AG im assuming the injectors each have ground wires...check those...should be somewhere in the intake side...

^ you're right. If you open the harness up around where the intake manifold ends, at the front side of the car, you'll see 4 or 5 black wires crimped together. Had that problem on a friends car as well.

Before you go crazy taking stuff appart, buy some cleaner and spray your MAF sensor. I was bogging nasty and would only get up to 3000 revs before a nasty sputter. Little carb cleaner and all my fears about fuel lines and fuel sending units and injectors and valves and other shit where taken care of. Start with the simple things first and work your way to the hard stuff.
