LSD seems to be getting louder/harsher.

my tomei lsd which was installed about late september/early november and was drifted on at the morosso event. Now i didn't kill the tires i drove in on so i used them for the ride back home....and for another month or so. The driver side inner tire was pretty worn from drifting, and the negative camber, the drivers was in a little better condition.

What i'm thinking might have happened is since the contact/grip was different for both wheels it wore the clutch plates a bit unevenly. In low speed turns in neutral i can hear it clunking but i'm talking about full lock parking spot speed turns(left). Doesn't do it so much or noticeable when i make right hand turns.

I changed the fluid 2 weeks ago with torco stuff and lsd additive from enjuku. And did the figure 8's again for about 25-30mins and after that it felt a tad bit better.

I just installed a spec stage 3 6-puck sprung hub clutch. Before it failed i had an ACT HD pressure plate and street disc. That shouldn't have anything to do with lsd engagement/clunking would it?

Any ideas or info is appreciated, unless it's just normal. It doesn't bother me, i'm just not sure it should be getting more aggressive i've read it would get a bit smoother in time getting worn in. :bigthumbu

You think if i got the tomei fluid it might smoothen it out a bit? I just don't know where to find it.

Different fluid changes how audible the diff is and how the clutch plates engage.

Do a little research about whether the tomei diff uses a synthetic fluid or not. You are supposed to use the correct fluid, if you dont you will find it will make more noise and might not lock as hard. It all depends on the clutch plates inside and what they were designed for.

I know nismo diffs like mine use synthetic fluid i use redline, in kazz diffs they use non synthetic, they get angry if you dont.

tomei is definately non synthetic. i'm using the 80w-90 torco gear oil and the lsd friction modifyer. Tomei recommends their fluid, it's expensive but if i could find it i'de use it. It's the same 80w-90 weight. And it's locking harder, not softer. I've read people use synthetic oil it quiets it, but thats because it's not locking as hard. I don't wanna do that.

take into consideration, once the diff had been broken in, the clutch plates have more friction, the noise you hear are the clutch plates engaging and releasing. Just think of it this way, if its making noise you know its working, lol. Keep the fluid clean, every 2 events or so and try different fluids, they get changed often enough.

A few people have noticed their 2ways quieted down alot after adding ford's lsd friction modifier.

so are you guys saying your LSD got more aggressive and engaged harder as time went on? I figured it would settle down a bit. I don't miind the noise/clunking/shaking at all, i just want to make sure nothing is wrong as it's pretty new only a few months old.

2 ways from what i have read are finicky that way and need to be changed regularly for optimal performance, but it will always make noise

yea its normal man i have the same diff.. nothing is wrong with it.. depending on how you drive, you should change fluid every 2-3500 miles

incorrectly shimmed pinion gear will make a constant humm, not diff plate clunking that I think hes talking about.

I bought my diff second hand so I was not the one breaking it in. Listen to this though, I drove around really easy for a couple weeks while I was working something out with my engine management system and my diff quieted down alot. It would hardly make any noise at all. I noticed that it was not locking the inside wheel as hard as it once was. I drove my car across the state to an event, drifted for 3-4 hours. On lunch I noticed that the diff plates started locking hard again, like normal noise, normal lock up and everything. I guess the clutch plates just glazed over a little bit while I was driving easy. That didnt last long once I got on the track. ;) Kinda similar to when you drive easy on a metalic or race brake pad, it starts to make noise until you do a few hard stops.

my brother and i did the install, it was shimmed properly, we even used the gear paint the make sure the ring gear was making proper contact (center of gear). I also noticed last night on the highway that when i'm accelerating, and i lift off the throttle the rear feels a little loose for a second or 2, feels like it shifts slightly to the left when i lift. I am getting a noticeable humm/vibration at higher speeds now. It kind of sounds/feels like when my drive-shaft carrier bearing was bad, so i will check that first. :ugh:

i have a spare open diff in case and all, but i really dont want to swap/diss-assemble this thing to see if something is wrong, but i also don't want to ruin a pretty new unit.

This happened to my uncle, and it turned out to be the pumpkin itself has a set of teeth that were bad, so we took out his 2-way and installed into another pumpkin, and presto, that loud ass humming noise was gone!

in no way does the sound/noise bother me. u gotta sacrifice comfort for performance, i'm just making sure it's "normal" noise, and not something thats messing up inside. I just find it a bit odd that its getting more aggressive, and never had this type of noise etc. before. i will see how it feels in the next few days and decide if i want to take it apart and maybe swap into my other pumpkin i have sitting around. does anyone know ANYWHERE that can get the official TOMEI diff oil? i'm sure i could look harder but so far no luck. :rolleyes:None of the places i found that sell the lsd unit actually has the oil itself, just the unit with the fluid. :ugh:
