A nice p&s I'd go with the canon g9. I know its a little more than you wanna spend but trust me the next camera you buy after will be a dslr.

hayabusa03rx said:Hell no on the d40. You won't have AF with all of the Nikon lenses and you also limit yourself to Sigma lenses and not even all of those. Also you only have 3 AF points and like 2.5 fps. It uses SD cards instead of compact flash so if you get any other Nikon camera body your going to need to buy different cards.
Also you have to remember not everyone is ready to drop Lglass money. They want quality but don't wanna pay to play. Everyone I talk to I tell them your going to be spending atleast $500 on a good lens, with canon being the 70-200 f4L. I'm not sure about Nikon. People aren't ready to spend over 1k on camera gear just to get started.
Also your gonna have to use Pshop a bit. Which is going to be more time some people aren't willing to do. Also pshop isn't an easy program to learn, well the basics are but in depth stuff that people are trying to achieve isn't easy.
Sorry for going off topic but I just like to let people know what they are getting into before they just jump into a dslr.
