port n polish question

I haven't done a search on this yet because I wanted to know from some experienced backyard mechanics what would be a good starting point or my best option.

question is...to port n polish a head, intake manifold or tb is there a kit for pnp or should I just use use a dremel kit?

I know porting is the widening of the passage to increase air flow, and polishing of the surface is to decrease air flow resistance.

again I didn't want to do a search because I didn't want to end up buying a bungy kit because of lack of knowledge.

thanks for your help guys.

lol

240sicknessX = best option

if I had the money right now I probably would but unfortunately I can't afford to pay someone to do it...not only that but my main reason is that its a skill I wanna learn and develop (i like doing things myself)...like learning to weld and how to polish wheels, valve covers and the like.

grab a couple of heads and try. you are not going to see a lot of hp gain from it, mostly if your na. your must bet is to start reading everything you can about your engine and how you can gain more hp and still be reliable.

Your best bet is to grab as many junk heads as you can and practice practice practice, Porting and Polishing is an art that takes time, patience and some serious work to master, I wouldn't advise p&p on your personal car if you have no idea what your doing. Your gonna have to search ALOT, Check importuner.com and search p&p they did an artice on it (sep 05), modified mag did one as well (july 07).

I'm not doing and pp but i am port matching my engine at the moment, I'm going to be posting a build up of my car/engine shortly, follow along if you'd like.

And no they don't have a kit, just get a dremel kit with stones.

Or check this out, im interested in buying it, if you get it lemme know how it is.

thanks guys I really appreciate all the info...I know its gonna take some time to master but its worth...I think ima hit up u pull it and and a grab a head and im or two just practice on...thanks mongooze the dremel kit is exactly what I wanted to know about, and thanks for all the other info. ima look into that.

YAH Bless

i dont i repeat donot recomend doing this yourself. Ive done several port and polishes and its not a easy thing you can just learn how to do. It needs to be exact on all ports not just making them bigger. If you do it your self and its not exact your gonna fuck your motor up. Save the money and pay someone to do it.

exhaust would be easier than intake because on intake you kinda want it a bit rough ( textured ) to create a tiny bit of turbulence so the fuel and air mix well ( this is coming from someone that graduated from UTI in the nissan department )

disclaimer you need to know what you are doing. :bigthumbu

QFT getting the right texture to it with a dremal is damn near impossible too but hey if you want to do it go for it bro im not gonna stop you but i dont want to see a thread on here about you fucking up your head. Im not trying to be a dick but its one of the hardest thing to do to a motor its like boreing out your motor your self with a drill just not a good idea. but if you got a spare head laying around go for it and see if you can do it but you have been warned by several people on here about how hard it is. If you got a questions on how exactly to do pm me and ill explain ferther.

i wouldnt do it

u got my vote todo it!!!! harbor freight ftmfw!!!! just do it! whats the worst that can happen? when ur done use a file to smooth everything out!!!!

intakes not to bad either! its common sense! but then again this is sfldrifters!lol i still say try it!! gotta learn some how!

doing a port and polish isnt something you can figure out you have to be tought it. Its a exact sience to get optimal flow and fuel mixture with out milling too much of the head away to the point that it overheats. If any thing id research the hell outta it before you try it.

Whats up with dissing sfl your new you dont have to be here. Im trying to steer him in the right direction when your trying to get him to mess up his car. If you dont know what your talking about dont post bullshit in a tech thread.

say what u want, but people need to try things themselves too! someone had to try it them selves first!!!! every head is diffrent so theres no exact way todo every port and polish job. theres only a basic start, then from there is what performance outputs, powerband and really the application of the vechile, desides the port and polish job. i just silpmly to him to try it. not blindly but reasearch then try, not take bits to the head and ravage it. lol take its to heart!

no but seriously its not that easy because if it was people would be doing that before they put bolt ons, beside you know how much talent you need to get the exact air flow through out all of the ports?

im not saying anyone can just wake up and do it and be a pro, but practice makes perfect. im in no way telling him to do his first time and then slap it on his car and call it a job done, im just incurging him to try , practice and learn, i know it takes talent, skill and knowelege but u goota start somewhere

naturally im gonna do some researching first...i just wanted to know what would be my starting point with the tools to use....ive been looking and cant find a free online guide to port & polishing (not giving up) like i said before i figured theres exp folks on here that can point me in the right direction...sas thanks bro :bigthumbu i didnt know that if you port to much from the head over heating issue might arise...i just wanna start learning to better myself mechanicly... port matching aint as serious as porting so thats what i plan on doing to my intake mani and exhaust mani :ugh: .

thanks again guys for all your input
