just out of curiousity, is there anyone on here that would be capable and willing to replace the coolant seals in the motor of an fc???
not looking to get it done now, just really want to know if there are any takers, how much you would want, and a time frame

DAMN another f'ing rotary thread?!
do you have a hoist? i might be able to do it. thats basically a rebuild u know that right? i can do 500 labor. estimated 2 weeks turn around time, not including waiting for shipping. or u can do it yourself, super easy, how-to's can be had for cheap.

yes i understand that is basically a rebuild. i really know nothing about rotarys. with you tearing the motor down is there anything else i would have to replace in the process other than the seals???

how many miles on the motor?
in a basic rebuild you'd need all new apex seals, coolant jacket seals, gaskets. gasket set with new stock seals and springs for the apex, side and corner all go for $600+, but if the housings have too much flaking then you'd need newer used housing which can be had as a set for 200. if it had good compression before and not many miles then you may be able to reuse compression seals and housings. this is all going off of memory so give or take a few but i can look it up for sure.

kit prices are here: http://atkinsrotary.com/index.php?pag=5
stock rotaries from factory usually last 130k-160k before compression starts getting weak, if your engine is well below that you can get kit A, if you want new seals then kit B.

before any parts are purchased it must be torn down and inspected for extent of damage to make sure we get whats needed and to get a true estimate of parts cost.

umm, quick question, has anyone ever heard of, know somebody that used, or personally used irontite? and if so, what happened?? ive read good things time and time again on various forums, but want to know if anyone has used it

it seems like something to at least try. worse case scenario it doesnt work.
also i wanted to mention that if you can remove and install the motor i can do the rebuild for 300 labor. i can be there to help you unhook and hook up everything correctly. im just putting it out there in case that doesnt work out for you.

he would probably recommend that it be rebuilt, rotary owners know you never cut corners on a rotary it'll come back to haunt you or costing more in the end. i've read the thread on the irontite and it seems to work with some success but in one case the leak was too severe and it got worse probably because he had to run it so hard for it to work.

hmmm, ya i figure i will try it and see what happens, but i gotta order it on their website, no one sells it locally. thanks guys

If its just coolant seals it wont cost too much. I got a friend that will do it for cheap, big rotary head, done same day. Just have to contact him cause he runs up and down florida everyday.

he knows just about everything there is to know about them is what i hear, but unfortunately dude sold the car i wanted, FUCK ME!!! so i guess ill store this info in my "may come back to" folder, and close it on up for now

does he know that a true diesel rotary is extremely difficult because of its high surface-to-volume area and comparably low compression numbers per static compression ratio. and that the low compression is the obligatory effect of having a compression stroke that lasts 270 degrees of shaft rotation, 1.5 times longer than that of piston motors. does he also know that a rotary can have any amount of faces greater than one and that 3 faces was chosen by wankel because it was the best compromise between duration of compression stroke and the max angle the apex seal makes to the perpendicular of the housing surface and that max angle occurs at BDC? that the number of flanks(faces of the rotor) is exactly the amount of times the output shaft must do a full rotation for one full rotation of the rotor? and the list goes on.
90% of this you wont find in any literature, this is information i've accrued through countless hours of research and my knowledge of calculus a&b. why you may ask would i do such a thing? because i wanted to redesign the wankel rotary engine to make it better, but albeit his hands on experience is beyond mine.

ahhhh the rotary.... some experiments should just be left alone to rest and die. :D

at least its an original concept
