As for that Miata vs. AE86 issue; I'd say it's a bit of a popularity contest. Some people prefer the AE86 because of its accessibility and inexpensive characterisitcs (at least in Japan), and others are recent converts thanks to drift media; the Initial D series, and cults.
The Miata is a versatile vehicle that is indeed rather light and balanced, and has its crowd -- those who take advantage of its small RWD chassis. The 86 is just more popular due to media and it's apparent ever-standing following. Just like my car compared to the Civics. From what I know, the AE92-generation Corollas are just as good if not more potent than the corresponding Civics, yet there's a ridiculous amount of Civics running around. It's just that the AE92 platform is underrated. Seems to be the same case with the Miata regarding the AE86's popularity, in my opinion.
