Universal Turbo?

Can these really be 'universal'??

If so, what is the difference between dry and wet housing? What are the options that are given to fine tune your specifications? What is a wastegate?

Universal meaning that you only purchase the turbo charger for your application, your engine. Different sized engines flow more air, so optimally you would want a turbo properly sized to fit. There is some leaway inbetween a too big and a too small turbo. There are a lot of varibles to take into consideration when picking a turbo for a engine that i am not going to go into right now.

Speak about this dry and wet housing? i dont understand or have heard of wtf you are talking about.

A wastegate is a valve that is regulated via a spring. The wastegate has a boost source nipple on it which you run a line to a boost source. Once the vehical is in boost, the air pressure pushes aginst the spring to open the valve. This valve is placed on the turbo manifold (between the cylinder head and turbo. This bleeds off exhuast gasses in a different route then what is directed towards the turbo, in result controls turbine speed, which controls the amount of boost that is made.

There are 2 different kinds of wastegates, internal and external. All factory manufacutered vehicals come with an internal wastegate for simplicity and easy design of all parts. External wastegates are used more for race applications where specific boost regulationis nessacary; and where higher amounts of exhuast gasses are needed to be rerouted before they hit the turbine.

You can pick taylor these different specifications per your application of compressor and turbine.

Housing
Housing a\r.
Wheel size
Wheel trim

and you can choose different cartrage construction.

You can alter these varibles to achive a device that flows air the way you want your engine to make power.

You have a lot to learn, do not expect to turbo your future car for more then a year after you have been reading a educated forum about turbocharging. There are SO many things to take into consideration, purchasing decisions, equipment type, installation procedure, maintence, after installation tuning, more maintence, paying attention to your car and setup, and maintence, and paying attention to your setup. I know alot, ive been reading about this thing called turbo charging about 3 years now and have a pretty good grasp about alot of stuff. I still had things that i had to deal with when i turbod my ka that i did not expect.

Here are some links for your reading that you should know:
www.howstuffworks.com and www.google.com for more advanced \ particular directed information.

It is good to know how these things work, 4 Cycle engine (otto cycle engine), 2 stroke engine, Turbochargers, Limited Slip Differentials, Intercoolers, Wastegates (might be covered in the turbo articals), Manual Transmissions.

Look over the articals that were written at www.turbosaturns.net This place has a lot of
detailed tutorials on how to read compressor maps, another how wastegates work, ebc
instalations, nitrous, bleh bleh bleh lots of other crap.

things that make a kit proprietary to a particular car and engine setup, injectors size and type, turbo size, intercooler piping, engine management, equipment, lots of things. universal means you get the turbo in about any size you want for your engine any size it is.

my fingers are tired.

Your fingers are tired? Darn. After that wall of text, even mine would be. Thank you, oh great god of automobile tech knowhow...

Out of those things you listed, I only didnt know about wastegates. I know about howstuffworks.com and google.... Thats just insulting.... :)

About the dry and wet housing... I re-read the Turbo description:
wet or dry bearing housing

I guess that is the difference between oiled bearings in the turbine and a different kind of bearrings.

Thanks though! Once again, you seriously made me understand.... Not an easy feat, if I do say so myself...!

So it IS universal, but you have to adapt it to whatever engine you are using; that is the gist of 'universal' as I now percieve it.

Yes universal means it can be adapted to work with anything, some people think if they see universal it means that it's built for everything. You got lucky that Rick(240SicknessX) responded to you he gets so into talking about a?f ratios and turbo setups that he eventually gives you a full in-depth look into Corky Bell's: Maximum Boost. :D

if you thonk abou it all turbos are "universal" some just work better for your application.

Why do you keep saying **** like that? It's aggravating me.

Thanks, oneviaman. I guess I never thought about them all being the same... (in one way or another..) I always thought they were engine-specific.

im glad my post helped you, i was showing you how stuff works becuase they have amazing diagrams that help illustrate the actual thing. I am sure right this second you could not draw how the clutch fork intermeshes between the 6 different gear selections in a 5 spd transmission. howstuffworks dose know how to draw it and shows you how it works with animations, look in to it dont just disregard it as noob advice.

heh and the wet or dry bearing housing cought me off guard too, i put "turbo bearing housing" in google and im pretty sure the dry or wet option is if you want your cartrage additionally cooled by the engine coolant system along with the manditory oil supply port.

it will take a little bit but anything said on a forum once or twice shouldnt be taken to heart, 95% if this forum is south east florida and we know each other by name and face, we do joke around and no one is excluded as you know from m4nfred's responces. lol deal with it.

+1 for getting your hands on corky bells, maximum boost. i belive its sold at boarders and online. i havnt read it yet though.

ahahahahahahahaah oh man.......oh

Here's the mistake noobs make. It's all good to ask questions, but since you are new to tunning most of your questions have already been asked. What you need to do first before asking your questions is make sure they haven't been asked already. You say it's an insult to think you don't know about google? Well you should use it to answer most of your questions. That's what I did. I try to never ask any questions but first searh for them. When it came to swapping my motor I was on RX7Club.com and TeamFC3S.org searching for everything I needed to know, and when I couldn't find it THEN I asked.

just a friendly tip ;)
