V mount Questions

I have been serching online trying to find the pros and cons of one of these set ups. i know that the biggest pro is the response time vs a FMIC set up. my question is at the end with the V mount being so close to the motor and getting the heat from it aswell and not having a vented hood, would you really gain power? is it worth all the fab time or just go with a FMIC save the trouble.

The main reason i like the V mount from what i have read is the response but also the stealthness too of no one seeing your intercooler and knowing whats up.

you get way more air flo to both units instead of just 90 % hitting the intercooler. you should get a vented hood for full function of the v mount. the way i have mine setup is with heat shields inclosing the intercooler and acting as an air duct , so the air has no where to go but up into the intercooler after hitting the rad.

but if i dont want to get a vented hood is there some other kinda of method that can be had? i just like the oem look of the car. maybe i could fab something that could duct the air back out or something?

oh and btw if someone with a s13 could post pics of a V mount set up that would be great.

i wounder if i could make a seal with the hood like the new ZR1 vetts have and then just leave the IC just open to the top of the car...... this is an idea.

nver seen a v mount on a s13 intresting

man i was looking at my car the other day and thinking it would be so easy to do. and i was trying to figure this all out and keep the a/c ( i know the condensor would restrict some) i dont know just think out loud seeing what you people think

you could make a shaker style hood or cut the top of the bumper off and make a big ass duct into the v mount then modify a s14 grill or something else to keep a clean look.

You NEED a vent or air will not flow through.

V-mounts don't increase power

People go v-mount for efficiency reasons. Mostly to increase radiator efficiency. Some people do it to increase throttle response but you can accomplish this by just moving the intercooler and radiator back (unless you are planning to run ac) and you won't have to worry about hacking your core support. Look at Raffis setup for a perfect example and for details on how to DIY, check out the old Sport Compact Car Silvia build.

Mount a FMIC upside down. There for the piping is much shorter.

If you plumb it right you will drop a couple feet or so. More responce. Less fab.

Do yourself a favor and get the right size Intercooler and piping. Pick your turbo then go from there.

or you could do side-mounts depending on the boost levels.. it's a shitload easier to hide a SMIC, and air ducts would be no problem, just cut a hole in your bumper

Yeah but a side mount is small and will hold him back power-wise.

that's why i put "depending on boost levels" .. i mean, he's looking for stealth and it's pretty easy to hide a sidemount. (and the radiator can breathe) just my $.02 in case SMIC slipped his mind

i will be looking at 250's at the block so talking to slick rick i think that he said something in the ball park of 8-14 psi depending on the turbo. I will get a t25 or t28 from a sr (or if a better option is out there?) with a SMIC i thought that they would have the most amount of piping and the least amout of cooling? i guess i will just say fuck it to stealth and go with what is the most practical.

A side mount makes no sense at all for what you want - long piping and shit efficiency.

But the piping would be long as fuck...

FMIC upside down! Do it! Trust me the piping is much shorter then the Traditional FMIC setup.

I dont think ill ever v mount my inter cooler and radiator on any of my setups. People under estimate the power of ducting the air from the bumper to the radiator, and if its not done properly, its worthless.

Use the proper sized inter cooler with a GOOD CORE. Ive had alot of good experiances with bar and plate intercoolers, spearco, greddy, ect that are sized for the power it was used for.

Once my car is back on the road making more power ill have a close eye on manifold air and coolant temperatures. I might have to duct my radiator, I may not.

fuck the idea of side mounts. horrible, bad design, no. fuck that

metanol injec? that would help me keep cooler temps right. but where should you install the injector? or is it not really worth it.

Meth\water injection is a band aid for an improper setup. Not cool. I have the same thoughts as the author of Maximum Boost, Corky Bell. Not on my car or any one that I have a part of.
