V8 question

wanted to know if i had a v8 could i shut off four cylinders when the power isnt needed so that it would save gas like the chrysler and cadillacs do? I know it can be done but could it be as simple as putting a switch into the fuel injector wires to shut it off? Over time would it wear out rings valves etc.. if it was possible and that simple? just somthing ive been thinking about.

no its more complex than just flipping a switch!lol thoses motors have programed ecu and years of mechanics built into the motors for them to run like that one of the setups uses collapseable lifters so push rods arent engaged! but i really dont think u would have the reasources to do/have the time to do something like that! save your money and just spend it on the gas!

just get a tranny with a really tall 5-6th gear then just use them for daily, thats how GTO's and corvettes get MPG's in the mid 20's or so

yea good point but i think i could still run it with lifters and valve train still moving wont run good but might work maybe just shuttin 2 off might not hurt i dunno im going to look further into it cause i do want to make big power out of a 5.7 350 trans am but need it to be a daily driver

if you have an transam...should be 6 speed. pop it into 6th gear as often as you can. nothing like cruising at 50-60 mph doing only about 1500 RPM

lol pull out 4 of the plugs and ur a chrysler and when u wanna run on 8 cyl again pull over and plug 4 back in lmfao

nope that wouldnt save fuel that would just kill your power output the same amount of fuel would still be sprayed into the intake to those cylinders.

Chrysler shuts the injectors off the spark plus off and the even uses colapable lifters on the intake side to keep the intakes closed to reduce pumping loses from the compression stroke.

You could make big power with a v8 ( usually with a bigger cam ). Pull 2 spark plugs and I bet the car wont idle, I'll bet 200 bucks it wont run on 4.

might not on 4 but ive done it but on 6 it should and pulling the plugs would still have the injectors shooting fuel but if i shut off the circuit it would stop throwing fuel maybe jus two cylinders then when i want he power flip a switch 2 turn on all cylinders and yea

they don't shut off the spark plugs if they did they would foul

a write up on how GM uses the Displacement on Demand for their LS v8 motors.

I just finish takeing a class on gm dod if your interested in the info LMK

Dude big power and a v8 with fuel economy don't exist. Get a 6spd and call it a day.

+1

this goes for anything performance. you cant gain power and still have economy

eh sorta but not really. GMs latest LS motor even modified still pull down impressive numbers.

huh? i bet you that its not getting as good as gas mileage as it once was... i mean we put bigger injectors and faster flowing fuel pumps in for a reason. think about it.

those caddillac motors never ran right and like most were replaced with normal motors. they pretty much sucked ass. honestly it's a bad idea, just get a 6spd/mess with your final drive.

depends on the mods, quite a lot of them still pull down mid 20s, even the Zo6 pulls down high 20s. LSX are very effiecent motors

eh.. yeah you would have to know the mods. but as for trying to shut off half the cylinders, thats just a bad idea. unless you get that motor and drop it in and have that system running on that car too. i dont know camero's to well but i would follow what everyone else is saying about the 6spd.

Impressive hp numbers on the dyno or fuel economy? They have great fuel economy because of their 6th gear. Drive an f-body in the city, and your pocket will beg for mercy. :ugh:
