I searched, didn't find a thread like this so here it goes:

What does everyone do for work? Thought it would be interesting, can help some of you get an idea of where to look for jobs, who to ask for help etc.

Name of Job: Celtic Communications

Duration: Going on 2 years here, almost 4 years in the field total.

Description: I install phone systems and computer networks. I do the maintenance, troubleshooting and upgrading of both. I'm currently taking classes to get more into the IT Administration side and less phone work.

Why you do what you do: I love this job, I'm always learning something new - the computer world changes way too fast to get bored of anything. Plus, working for Celtic Communications I get to make lame ass Irish jokes about eating Lucky Charms.

Licenses / Certifications to acquire job: Right now I've only got my A+, I'm scheduled to take Server 2003 70-290, and Managing Maintaining Server 2003 Infrastructure 70-291 within the next month.

I'm the Network Admin for a prep school and a full time student. I'm also A+ and have my MCSE (never updated for 2003). I hate computer shit because people are annoying. I should graduate this summer w/ a BS in Intl Business and a BA in Marketing. My hopes and dreams are to backback Australia, Western Europe, and some of South America. Then I want to own a burrito cafe in socal and basically chill all the time.

Haha, I hear ya - that's why I'm trying to get into a higher position while I'm still young. I deal with enough end users daily, it drives me nuts - but I'm going to stay in the IT field with the hopes that I'll have people working under me dealing with the end users. I always like seeing the careers people start out in and switch over to.

You'll always answer to someone. Your best bet is to be a database admin or something of that sort so you'd only be answering to the IT director...and hopefully he'll know his ass from a hole in the wall and he'd be the one dealing w/ the retards in upper level management.

I've noticed a lot of these high level IT administrators have that problem. It amazes me to see these truly incompetent admins running places like Medical Centers - one example was getting livid over a cable I had installed that 'wasnt f*&%ing working' when it was missing a patch cord at the switch end.

Front desk worker at Planet Fitness of Naples. Seriously, i do what you see any other front desk person at a gym doing. Sell memberships and say hello and goodbye to everyone. Easiest/ most boring job ever.

Yea telcomm guys are always getting crap like that.

The way it works is like this - to get these jobs, usually a formal college degree is highly valued. It doesn't matter what its in. Certifications and experience seem to be afterthoughts if you can talk up some game and have a degree. So you get condescending d-bags who can't figure out how to plug in a patch cable making $70k+ a year. Welcome to IT.

Ahh how awesome.. i want a new job soooo bad! i dislike working for lawyers. :(

I'll see what's up, I don't think we're hiring cause it's been a little slow lately but I'll see. It'd be quite a drive too, we're in Delray.

You're tellin' me, I go from Palm Beach Gardens to Delray everyday. I hate driving in all that traffic - even worse with all the construction goin on down 95.
