Are you satisfied with going to school for anything automotive? I searched for reviews on schools like UTI, Id want to focus on welding but be able to have all around experience. Ive thought of going right to where id like to work and ask them what the requirements are. Im all ears and respect everyone here as i know there are great mechanics on this forum. thanks
BTW Im willing to relocate
 
Heres the deal, you get what you put in. And with any TRADE, there are two ways, you either go to school and learn and then go out and get a job, or you can get a job on the bottom on the totem pole and work your way up way up. either way works and either way gets you what you want but its up to you on how you do it, personally i went to uti and im happy I went to school because I knew nothing about cars( i knew a little bit ) or the industy or anyone in it. I also took a welding and body shop class at a local high school after because i wanted to learn those things, vas on here also went to uti and he works for diablosport. Bill on here didnt go to school he learned on the job and hes one of the best mechanics I know.

Currently im working at a performance shop doing cool things, I can fabricate and pretty much build a car from scratch. I can do ANYTHING to a car. Because I wanted to learn that.

Now sometimes its hard both ways, either you dont have money for school, relocation, housing etc. or you cant find a job that will train you especially these days, so your just gonna have to figure out whats best for you.

You say you wanna focus on welding, like fabrication? well hah thats a world all its own. Honestly the best education for fabrication is experience,and your mind. buy a welder buy metal start making shit. tons of books and videos you can buy.
There is a school for fab in cali too

to answer your question, yes im satisfied but another question for you is. what is your goal? I reached mine so im happy.

I bought a 400 dollar mig welder.. and eventually i moved up to a tig. The way i did it is i just taught myself. Same goes for paint and body, before i painted my car i had never done anything of the sort. I went to the junkyard, got some spare fenders and practiced till i got it right. I can do anything to a car now. IMO one of the best ways is to teach yourself. Reasearch and apply it.

^ This is not an option for people who do not OWN a welder... The course is only $233 and they provide training on ARC, MIG, and TIG welding as well gas welding, torch cutting, etc...

Im signin up for the upcoming term just for my own use not for work or anything... should be fun
 
I didn't say "Grab your welder, go outside, weld", so I was not implying that he has one. I said get one. Man up, save money, and buy one. If you cant save money and at least buy a decent used welder, then you're not motivated enough to learn anyway, so give up while ahead.
 
Or he could actually goto a course... learn how to properly use one before he spends $$$ on something he's not sure if he likes... Access to a TIG welder itself is worth the admission
 
I'm not against taking a course by any means. But if you buy a welder, I dont care who you are, you can learn. I think you should know if you like it or not, before doing anything. Do you want to attach two pieces of metal together, yes, ok then get one. It's not baseball where you're maybe going to get bored, it has a real purpose, and its not that expensive.
 
A good A/C welder is 3-5k, for under $500 you can learn how to do it, walk into anywhere and be like yea i can weld.

I did this took a class on welding spent 128 hrs burning metal. got a job and was yea i can weld alum, oh cool here weld this, and saved 5k and now have access to a welder.

It can go either way.

Was it a college class you needed full time registering or an adult ed. class you could just take?
 
adult ed setup like 400 and like 40 evening classes.

Heres my deal since i could drive iv breaking cars. So after paying my mechanic like 1200 in labor in one month i said f*** it and asked him if he needed a helper/bitch around the shop i would like to learn. He said sure and paid me $10 an hr to learn and be a bitch. at the time i was working at a pizza place delivering, and making between 40-50k a year back when things were good. Well restuarant biz slowed down and i worked at the shop full time. Fast forward 4 years i still work at the same shop, now i make $20 an hour flat rate. And not to toot my horn but have become a damn good mechanic and good at diagnostic (which is the hardest part of doing mechanics is knowing how to find out whats wrong). Any asshole can remove bolts and change parts but it takes brains to do diagnostics, especially electrical diag on newer cars. Right now i'm expecting a raise to around $22-25 an hr. I never went to school besides some local parts house classes.

Dont know if this will help. Mechanics is a shitty business unless you own a shop you will never get rich but never starve just from turning wrenches. If i could do it over again (which i'v been debating but dont want to quit drifting quite yet) i would go to school and do something in the medical field.

I need to get a job somewhere else. Wish I made $20/hr!
 
Its flatrate so some days i get 12hrs some i get 1hr. You know the deal its not like i can stand here drink beer and collect 20 an hour. Other downfalls or my job are i deal with the customers, do estimates, order my own parts, and if parts come wrong it wastes my time. You of all people know hiow flat rate works. How the shop slow? And do guys do mostly performance work or factory repair?

Like right now im waiting on parts that should have been here this morning. So im sitting here not making money drinking beer. When i get the parts i get paid 4 hrs and it should take no longer than 2.5 hr ninja time lol.
 
Since this is my thread Im going to point it in the right direction. I have owned and fixed/wrecked and sold at least 8 240s now and have been in forums reading and watching for almost 6 years. Im sure I can keep up a conversations with anyone here but in the real world i need that certification to show. As much as I would rather do things my way, society demands me to do the schooling. Im so defeated by society for every day not spent in school to get the certs or degrees.

I did register for the class and i hope to see some of you there!
