A friend of mine showed me this, so i'd like to share it =)
Here are two half hour segments from a Virginia law school class. The first talk is from a law professor and defense attorney, James Duane, the second segment is from the opposite side, a Virginia Beach police officer, George Bruch. The law students in this class paid a lot of money for this advice. It squares with everything I have ever heard from the police and lawyers I know. But don't take my word for it—I am not a lawyer, and don't pretend to be—watch it yourself.
And remember it if you are ever involved in a self-defense shooting.
One important thing to note here is that the two do not disagree. In fact, the second segment is not even a rebuttal, it's just an explanation of the various techniques the police will use to get you to incriminate yourself if you do decide to ignore this advice.

The only thing I will add to this—and again, I am not a lawyer—is to reiterate Professor Duane's very first point. Quote, "There is no way it can help." Emphasis his. The cops will tell you it can help. But as Officer Bruch points out, they are legally allowed to lie to you. And will.
You need to get used to the idea that you're going to be seen as a criminal, and treated as a criminal, at least for a while. And that's exactly why you'll talk your ass off. Because you're a good person, and you're going to hate the idea that anyone could even think of you as a suspect. But if you want to protect your rights and make sure that you have the strongest case for self defense possible, get used to the idea now. It won't be the end of the world. The end of the world would be to inadvertently say something that would give them the leverage to actually prosecute you. It's better to lose 24 hours waiting for the system to process you properly than to lose 24 years or $24 million in a civil suit because of something stupid you said while you were trying to make the cops like you."
