FD ProAM Vids

They're purpose made track tires, they may be available to the public, but they're made for drifting. Can you afford multiple sets of those for 1 event?

Can you afford any of the pro cars? No. Tires aren't the only thing that make up the pro cars success and this sport isn't for the poor either, so if you're looking at competing you need to put real money in the car as well as the tires.

I don't read rules. I'm ignorant as fuck. I thought you all realized this.

I don't exactly plan for a bright future in drifting, I just love to watch and drive...and the occasional debate with the occasional loss.

BTW Jerry, you've spent $15,000 on tires? You're nuts. (Not my jank ass Supra).

The 2010 rules refer you back to the FD website though I'm not sure I've ever found anything related to any of the rules on their actual website. I've always had to search the net for various rule books. The 2011 Pro rules are out there but somehow I didn't save it to my computer yet. I would image it too would have a tire appendix which referred me to the FD website.

Regardless, here's the 2009 Formula Drift Pro Rules section on tires in contrast to the Pro-Am rules I just listed above.
9 TIRES
9.1 TIRE ELIGIBILITY
Tires must be DOT approved and have a minimum production run of 2,500 tires, tires
available in the United States at regular retail outlets.
Tires must have a minimum tread wear rating of 140 (UTQG).
• 17 inch tires must have and MSRP of no more than $500.00
• 18 inch tires must have an MSRP of no more than $750.00.
• 19 inch tires must have and MSRP of no more than $1000.00.
Each entrant must declare their tire manufacturer as a part of the event entry form.
9.2 APPROVED TIRES
Only tires listed in Appendix C will be allowed. Teams who wish to use any size,
model, or brand not specified here must file for petition and gain approval from
FORMULA DRIFT.
9.3 MODIFICATIONS
9.3.1 Any attempt to modify tires in any manner is prohibited. “Grooving” or
“Shaving” of tires is prohibited.
9.3.2 The use of traction compounds or any other substance that may alter the
physical properties of the tire are prohibited.
9.3.3 Tire warmers or any other means of artificially altering the tire temperatures is
prohibited.
9.3.4 Tires must meet a minimum durometer reading of 49, hot or cold, at all
times during an EVENT, measured using an ISO868 or ASTM D2240
compliant Type A durometer.

Nice Beard Brother!!!

Yeah, I run the EXACT same tires as the entire falken team, mine are just smaller.
I believe 615k's are the BEST tire that you can run in drifting, but you cant put em on a stock car and go out and win FD.
The amount of time put into the chassis set up on the top 20 pro cars is mind blowing. For example, at Irwindale, Vaughn Gitten Jr has two completely different chassis set ups. One for day, and one for night. After day practice and into night time, the car goes up and the night time set up is dialed into the car.
The only way this can happen, is if there is alot of time and money involved. Time spent testing the car to find the correct set-up, and the money spent going to all of the testing events. Everything that team Falken does is logged so they will know for other times, or learn from their experiences.
Yes, tires do play into it, but chassis set-up is a HUGE part.

mind you and im not even serious about driting.... i do it for fun.

I saw this on wrecked:

Recorded Entry Speeds
Daijiro Yoshihara – 96.8mph (Final)
Daijiro Yoshihara – 96mph (Top 4)
Vaughn Gittin Jr. – 95.9mph (Top 16)
Fredric Aasbo – 94mph (Top 16)
Chris Forsberg – 92mph (Top 16)
Eric O’Sullivan – 91mph (Top 16)
Toshiki Yoshioka – 90mph (Top 16)
Walker Wilkerson – 89.4mph (Top 16)
Kenneth Moen – 89mph (Top 32)
Justin Pawlak – 86mph (Top 16)
John Russakoff – 84mph (Top 4

I wasn't coasting one bit. Drag race until popping the handbrake. Not sure what my speeds were though. The run-up felt really short, and I kept peeling out down the hill. Pro cars got some serious HP to go that fast.

Yeah it was nuts watching them initiate at the same spot and not flying into the gravel.

I remember watching a doc on the falken team if i remember right. the pro cars are set up alot softer than most people would think. they are actually hiring drag tuners to help get the traction in the straights for higher speed entries. soft enough to grip going striaght but stiff enough to get grip sideways.

That put a whole new perspective on the track for. I looks slower on this vid. I always thought it was a 4th gear track. Bert you sounded like u were running out of gear when I was watching the live feed

not running out but wasting shifting that shit, gears are too short, i wish i have time to practice the before went, but we run out of time.
