Oil's leaking... Help me figure out what this contraption is!

Okay, so my friend recently got his driveway repaved and it's lookin' nice. I'm the only one that parks my car in a certain spot. I'm always there, so it's basically reserved for me. My friend pointed out a stain where my car usually is. I decided to crawl under it tonight and see if it was just the drain plug loose. I tried to tighten it, but it was good. I used my finger and slid it across the plug and around and such and no fresh oil. But there's something that's bolted to the back of it that is covered in fresh oil.
I took pictures of it with my sidekick since my camera is too big to fit under my car with out a jack [yes... I can fit under my car with out it being jacked. No, I'm not dropping it. I like my skid plates how they are :bigthumbu Anyway... I took 3 pictures (poor quality), maybe you can help me figure out what it is.

NOTICE: That big thing in the circle is a hole. I was brave and stuck my hand in the hole (well, fingers) and there's another plate inside about 2-4 inches into it. The square thing in the back is a grate-feeling thing.

(I also accidently filled up my oil a bit too much last time. I was kinda thinking this might be an over-flow valve or something..? I'm not sure, honestly... and I checked my blinker fluid already, it's filled up :bigthumbu )

looks like rear main seal. drop the tranny unbolt the flywheel and remove and replace the seal bolt everything back up. good luck

Sounds intense.

How hard is this? I have limited tools [as in not even a jack/stands].
Guessin' I have to get a jack/stands, eh?

ya iam assuming its a 5 speed so it will make it easier, autos are very heavy on your stomach ill explain later. first jack the car up and put it on jack stands, get it as high as you can. drain the engine and tranny, unbolt the driveshaft get it out completely. next take out the shifter and undo the bolts on the tranny, u will need some long extentions and a swivel socket. when you have all the bolts out roll under the tranny and slide the tranny out, this should be fun cause you havent done it before just be carefull it doesnt land on you if your alittle fucker get some one to help if your auto good luck that bitch is heavy. once the tranny is out unbolt the clutch and flywheel, your almost done. now with the flywheel out the way youll be able to see the rear main seal pop the old one out with a flat head screwdriver and a hammer. slide the screwdriver behind the seal and pop it out. clean up the surface of the crank and install the new seal i would use a rubber hammer. with the new seal in just do the reverse of everthing and you should be done. 15min job piece of cake. hope that helps

Lmao, I'm 5'5" and 110 pounds... and it's auto. *d'oh!*

But where can I put the tranny? You said "slide it out." How the fuck am I supposed to slide it out? Slide it out of the bellhousing? [I think it's the bellhousing... not sure if it's the same concept with automatic]

Approximately how much does it weigh?

ok this makes it funner you have to take off the plate at the bottom of the engine. you will have to unbolt the torque convertor with the plate off turn the engine over, by hand get a socket on the engine pulley and turn the engine till you see a bolt or nut cant remember with. continue doing this till all the nuts or bolts are out. now diconnect the cooler lines on the tranny and it should be able to come out. if you still need help aim me plz

ps as a side note i would wait to do this till you have everything to go 5 speed and save yourself the trouble of having to do this again

Adding Break Fluid to oil just doesn't sound like a sound idea... I don't know why. But, I'm not one to mix fluids. =|

As my experience with drinking goes, it always leads to some bad shit going down.

it will swell the seal and it wont leak any more

okay mr jackson... if he adds break fluid to his oil it will cause the rubber seals in your engine to swell and weaken, then tear, leak weep and cause you to be doing a reseal job. Brake fluid is hydraulic fluid and the seals in your brake system have a different composition than the seals in your engine, just as adding motor oil to your master cylinder will cause brake failure adding brake fluid to your engine will cause seal failure.

OH!!!
