I can read 8,000 books on how a nascar is set-up. Setup my nascar like that, and it would probably drive like complete shit.
In drifting, its personal preference.
Reading books doesn't do shit for ya. Give a kid 3 months to read as many books on drifting and drift setups. Give another kid 3 months with a car to setup and practice on. I'm willing to bet my life that the kid with the car and practice is gonna out drive the kid reading books.
A lot of people have been around cars longer than I've been alive. That doesn't mean shit. Unless they've been actually driving them(in our case, drifting) it doesn't mean a goddamn thing. Sure, they can tell me whats wrong with my motor and why it makes this sound and fix my car. I can guarantee if they got in my car and tried to drive it, it would look like anyone else's first drift event.
Harri doesn't let his dad setup his drift car how his dad wants it, He sets it up the way he wants it. That goes for anyone that drives. They don't let people set their cars up. Yeah, maybe at first they take some direction from someone who has been driving for awhile, but after that, they change it to what they want. Im pretty sure ol papa bear isnt gonna let you change shit on his car.
Look, I'm trying to make my car better. Yea, its not going to be perfect, and its being set up with my dad's preferences, but if that means I will get to go out and drive then so be it. Maybe after I start driving and if I get him out there we can adjust what we have and go from there, but until then, I'm trying to get something put together under my dad's approval because thats the only way its going to happen. He has more experience than you think. Back in the day it wasnt really called "drifting." Hes been building and driving cars for a long time. Hes helping me based on what he knows, and what he has read, and we're gunna go from there. We've been listening to what people have to say, but at the same time, sometimes you just have to go out there and learn for yourself. just like you said. I havent been driving long enough to have a perfect set up in my mind. I'm trying to find it.
I guess my point is, I just want to get out there and drive. I don't care if the car is perfect or not. you learn either way and right now, thats all i want to do. You telling me what you think your perfect personal set up is isnt going to help me.
right. Your dad is a driving hero and used to secretly race F1 and actually sets up all of the top FD cars. My bad.
Let me lay it out here babe....If youre dad knew what he was doing, you wouldn't be talking about buying different width wheels, and he wouldnt be setting up a car from a book.
hows that grab ya?
oh, and marshall. your wheel still sticks out from your fender. It may look all sweet and awesome, but in my dads eyes, it looks like shit. So even though I want to go wider, its not going to happen.
Hes not setting up my car from a book. hes setting it up based on his experiences and using books, talking to people, and internet sources to help make it more "driftable"

this is what she has to do to be able to get her car out there on the track. if this is the means to the ends then so be it. her questions is will they clear the brakes... and no they wont she will need spacers end of story. now after she gets out there like you said she can make improvments on the car as they go.. is it a waste of money yes...
final note, kelsey, you need to tell your dad he needs to review his ideas on a "drift car"... a hard parked drift car with mad tyte camber, and super low offsets, fender flares etc, is NOT a drift car... it can be drifted, but it's not what SHOULD be out there... look at all the pro cars... they don'e have any of that shit.. hell, a lot don't even have wide bodies...
why waste the money "adjusting" THAT much, when you can get the basics down now, and have it ready for later, with just alignment/tire stuff to work out? doesn't make sense....
we're just trying to help her out of the box, i know her personally (although we've had our differences), and she DOES want to drift, and take it to higher levels... she IS also restricted by her dad, as much as that blows ass, he needs to know the basics from people who know the advanced shit... so we're trying to help her...
but fuck it, if they got money to throw away on throwing parts at it to figure out what works, and completely ignore what they NEED... then well, it's on them....
those wheels will not clear the brakes, tell your dad to go back to the drawing board with his fitment/wheel ideas...
The wheels fit fine in the outer fenders. But I was constantly smacking the inner fender well when I was up in the mountains and I've have it happen a few times goofing off. The car is low enough that if the wheel is turned and I hit a bump mid corner it slams. And that was with my 17x8+10's with a 235-40. I'll be using a 17x9+15 or +0 with a 245 or 255-40 tire.
I could solve this issue by raising the car but I like where its at.
You can see in this picture with the amount of camber gain under compression that it would easily hit the fender well in a corner. And thats with the wheel hardly turned in.
