Bananas 8==D ~ ~ ~ ~ 0-:

you have to kill a dragon with a sword dipped in chocolate. then you are giving the power of overdrift.

i read it in the drift bible.

*note: you cannot use dark chocolate

Alright, I'm stealing these from another forum, but here's another one by Koguchi. Not as clean, slows down a bunch, but it's really funny because it's in tandem and makes the guy following wreck haha.

I can just picture box going frame by frame, trying to figure out the workings of such magic. "Must harness special ability, in order to be more epic than anyone before me"

That was incredible. I've always thought Kawabata was one of the best (reason for him being the 2007 D1GP Champ), but I never thought this was possible. Only thing I can think of is tremendous amounts of rear grip.

my take on it...

i dont think its massive rear grip. its more the timing of the counter, how much angle his steering HAS, and how aggressively he is tossing it in. He also brakes in all of them i believe. he is basically throwing a 180 but throws it soft enough (while throwing it hard), with quick (early) countersteering. he catches it with the brake i think, and then dumps on the throttle. as the car stops its backward momentum while sliding to the side, it instantly starts going back forward and the car 'drives' out of the extreme angle.

think of being in your car, stopped, and turning wheel full over. now drop to clutch at like 4k and do a burnout. itll turn to the side. now instead of starting at a stop, you have to throw the car into a stop in the Y (forward/backward) momentum while keeping some X axis (sideways) momentum. The rest is all timing and throttle/steering to come out of it in the same direction or to transition.

its not impossible in theory but SHIT, its VERY insane to do.

haha, gotta love how the judges scream with the angle.
the ideal drift is to reach maximum angle before the apex and maintain it perfectly until the exit.
these drifts are what i like to call the ultimate drifts or awd drifts. where you come in with extreme speed and align your car with the exit at entry but generally its only possible with really tight turns.

to add to what boxmod said, in normal driving with gentle turns momentum is conserved by gently curving it thats why you can coast through an intersection turning left and by the time you are through the intersection you've lost very little speed.
the harder you turn the more grip you need to curve the momentum. drifting is a low grip sport thats why you have to go so much slower than race cars to conserve momentum.
what kawabata did was "kill" or bleed off almost all if not all of the y momentum (the momentum in the direction of entry)
and as that is occurring he is still applying power to slowly accelerate in the x direction.
the perfect way to explain it is its exactly like playing asteroids. you drift in the original direction and you face left or right and accelerate, except there's no friction forces to slow you down in the y direction.

althought I didn't make it to the apex because of my horizontal momentum from the angle, this sequence from Bladder shows my car going backwards for a short time and then pulling back out of it. I did it later and bogged out as I got into the turn. Both times I thought I was spinning out though and just got lucky...
