(S13) Steering rack & pinion?

Before anything, yes I have searched a bit. (Google & here)

I'm leaking massive amounts of p/s fluid from driver side, out of the boot on the steering rack. It's also making a clacking sound every once in a while. Those are definitely signs of a bad rack & pinion.

My questions are:

I'm better off getting a new, rebuilt steering rack from an auto parts store correct? I'm not about to go through the trouble of swapping it out for another used one and going through the same headache (unless I'd find someone that has an used one in very good conditions). I called Advance and they have the rack for $308 with a core charge of $60  (they said that's including the inner tie rods and dust boots). I then called Autozone and they charge like $280 w/o tie rods included. These prices seem pretty high but then again, it's the first time I've had to look into this so idk what they go for. Is there any place you guys would recommend that has them at a good price and are reliable? Near KENDALL preferably.

2nd question is, besides the new rack, what else do I have to / should replace? Or should the new rack come with everything I need?

Thanks in advance! Any help will be appreciated.

i bought mine from a place we use at my dealer, and was under $200, not positive on exact but i wanna say $160 (reman'd). a rebuilt comes with boots & inners. you should do steering rack bushings, because 99% of the time they're crapped out, and once you get to working on it, check the outers.

That sounds like a deal to me. Better than the quotes I've gotten so far at least.. Btw, it's an OEM re-manufactured rack right? Would it be possible to get their info? Or would you get a hold of them since it's through your dealer?

As for the steering rack bushings, I plan on going with Energy Suspension bushings. Good enough I assume?

Also, I'm not going to use the OEM inner/outer tie rods. I'm going with Tein inner/outer tie rods. I have a question for that though, I have seen many people and many setups using spacers at the ends. What's the purpose of that? What are they for? I've read something about bump steer / angle but I know nothing about that field. (My car is lowered quite a good amount) Idk if that affects the use of these spacers?

You fucking fgt get your shit rebuilt comes with boots get new outters and call it a day

I just bought a r/p a week ago from CarQuest for 220 +100 core (refunded when brought back) and it came with boots and inners.

Totally do the bushings, yes energy suspensions is a good idea to do.

The spacers you are talkign about i think are for the added angle. The tein rods have additional threads to allow for the spacer and still thread in correctly. Used on a non-extended inner will result in like 3 threads being in the rack :ugh:

Thank you sir for the info. I'm still a bit lost on the function of the spacers. What do you mean by the added angle? I know the spacers go on the outer ends.

im not sure what spacers your are talking about then... mine are in the space between the inner and the rack itself, a "fat washer" if you will. nothing I have goes on the outer, except a castle nut and a cotter pin to hold in place.

Yea it's definitely not what you're talking about. I know the SPL outer tie rods come with these spacers included. I've read on different setups where people use them but I still don't understand the purpose of them.

This is one of the setups I came across and this guy uses the spacers I'm talking about:

The spacers on the spl outer space the rods down to correct geometry on lowered cars and reduce bumpsteer. I don't think you can use this kind of spacer on tien outers though

That sounds more along the lines of what I've read so far. I know, or at least I think, that the Tein outer's don't come with those spacers. I wanted to know if you could get those spacers for the Tein's though. I think I've seen people with the Tein's and the spacers on the outers.

My car is sitting pretty low and reading up on what bump steer is, I could say that I feel like I have experienced those symptoms while turning and hitting a bump at higher speeds.

I had considered going with Z32 inners and SPL outers but the SPL's are a bit pricey (I know they're of good quality) and the Tein's are still just as good at a more affordable price. I would like to know if there are spacers for the Tein outers and is it a necessity or at least recommended to use these spacers or should I not be concerned about them?

yea, those spacers wont work without that hyme joint on the outer part. but it is pretty sweet. i need to get that setup myself. we were just talking about this today at the shop/

They are expensive but I love my spls I wouldn't go with anything else on a stock knuckle. They are def worth the extra money

Yea, I really wanted / want to go with the SPL's. Price is the only thing holding me back. For the price of the SPL outer, I can get the inner/outer from Tein. Where did you get yours? Do you know of any site that has them at a good price?

I got mine straight from spl their customer service is amazing they were back ordered for a week so they called the same day I placed the order to make sure that was ok then called me when they came in to let me know they were shipping. Just remember you really aren't getting that much of an improvement with tien they are just beefier. As far as the inners go I would skip tien and go with powered by max inners they are cheap thicker and longer for more adjustment and also have a built in 7mm spacer for more steering angle. If you search my name I did a comparison thread on the two a few months ago.

Actually i answered all your noob ass questions.

Not necessarily, but apparently you're the papi pingu of 240's so you'd know! Next time just refer to the tag below.

Yea I checked out the thread and I definitely see the difference. Those PBM inners look nice and real beefy. Thanks for the advice & input! Will definitely put it to use when I go to purchase the inners/outers.

Also, thank you Boxmod for your input as well! :bigthumbu

same thing happened to me but worse the rack just shit out as i was pulling into my driveway soo bad that it was immobile. i bought a reman rack from bennett and replaced the bushings as well i just used oem replacement bushings tho. im glad i grabbed new ones cause when i pulled out the rack the bushings literally fell apart....just a word of advice be very careful when removing and installing the four bolts that hold it in place they strip pretty easily i ended up having to do a nut and bolt combo on one lol....ooo and last but def not least MAKE SURE THE RACK IS CENTERED!! dont make the same mistake i did and assume it comes centered....GOOD LUCK BRO:bigthumbu
