my take on drifting in south florida

there are tons of jobs, you just have to do what it takes if you really want it. you can find shit on craigslist to buy/get for free, then turn around and sell it. Ive made 230$ on a 90$ purchase, i got an entire ps2 for free, ive even got a 1 day job for $180 before. There is random shit on there and then you can still work at taco hell and make money and get cheap food w/discount...

i could sit here and give you a step by step way of how to make it with nothing, but really, no one is prolly going to want to sacrifice THAT much.

i want to slide again, but i was broke as shit buying this and that. it was fun and i made it happen it just sucks with bills and shit and the worry of keeping a job over a sport.

id love to do it again, i have no problem doing what it takes but again you have to weight out your options and priorities.

if u cant do it physically or financially, then you should stop the shit talking.

there's kids with basically stock DD 240s out there drifting. it's not gonna cost that much to drift when u need 15 inch 195 tires and you barely have 150 hp to burn them up. Plus 25 bucks for the skidpad all day is cheaper than taking a chick (or dude if you roll that way) to the movies for a couple hours.

but everyone wants to build a drift car or have an sr in their 240 before they even start learning. Thats why it's expensive.

You are better off learning on a stock car and then adding parts as you can. That way you can feel the difference certain parts make.

it's not that lol i haven't had a 240 in almost 2yrs now. its just not too fun when you have a car payment and other bills.

id like to pick up a 240 but if i do events again, id be driving it to/from again which i hated haha.

i slid the shit out of KA's for the longest.

i rocked the cut springs and welded diff on a number of 240s lol

some of the best drifting I have ever seen was in 240's with bone stock ka's with coilovers.

Obviously you can't hang in the big leagues with that, but for weekend warriors its the way to go.

Have fun drifting or go broke 'being cool'. A lot of us have fallen victim to the latter.

alot of you guys on here dont know me i dont really get on sfl much im mainly on max fourms and tr but i agree there is a lack of support for this like i here more people talk shit about how if they had there car they could do better and stuff like that... ya know i just have a blast every time i go out there if my car breaks i fix it im useally the kid thats running back and forth trying to get shit going or help someone get it going... i have opened my mouth to people who "sucK" but its mainly becuase i never liked the person i go to every event i can make and afford i will stay up late as fuck the night before trying to get preped or find the last min tire mount guys if i cant drift i spectate if i cant spectate i still support and advertise online post bulletns do what everbut idk thats just me i dont care what anyone else does ill allways do what i do... people just need to stop bitching and acting like they are on top of the world just becuase they drift... its supposed to be fun lol

I ended up jumping into this "drifting" head first. First car was a lemon with a shitty KA with oil leaks and high-mileage with tons of street racing damage. Second was an SR, but I opted for that because of the experience with KA's. Either way I'm happy with my decisions now and you will never hear me complain about being broke you just won't see my face. Anyway this thread is way over due and I just think people should actually drift and worry about themselves and we would all be better off.

nah the whole vision here is getting skewed guys.

the discussion in the OTHER thread (that spawned this one off) was focused on getting bigger sponsors involved in the scene so we can have prizes and better events and possibly open up venues that aren't playing with us right now. Certain places won't let an 'unprofessional' type of thing to happen and need more money than we can afford as drivers (like $500 entry fee) so having a sponsor to support the event = keep entry fees down and drive badass places. also exposure to the scene here can help those of us who are trying to make this a career.

I have no problem with weekend warriors coming and hanging and doing their thing. But respect what WE are trying to build and do your small part by not being a 12 yr old. no one says you have to build a pro car, just dont ruin the image by trying to be the funniest guy with a cone for a helmet and driving with it.

RESPECT and PROFESSIONALISM is a character trait, and doesnt have to mean your car is $10,000 in look/performance.

come out, have fun, go home. just dont make the scene a joke.

I dont mean to rain on this parade but as far as the haters, bullshitters, fakers, posers, etc. etc. etc. and etc. wont ever stop. As this thread goes on there are ppl right now and possibly commenting on this thread right now that are and will be or part of the "problem"....I use to love coming out to dunken donutz. Met some of my best boys there. Had a blast at the bar-b-que at Markham, but to me no matter how many times a thread like this is written I feel like Bill Murray in Groundhogs Day repeating the same stuff over and over again and ppl still dont get it. And thas why you will never kno my face at an event, or meet, or anywhere else for that matter. I actually like it that way.... thas jus me. but I will support bigger events in South Florida. I think we need this.

(this comment was based on my personal opinion, if you dont like it please feel free to lick the nearest ball sack)

The sport will die if drifters dont work together. Especially with how small it is. I think the scene is smaller now than in 2004-05. That was when it was booming down here.

This is what I have been saying for the last year or so.

On national, big drifting boards, people still act as if drifting is "too big".

In reality, drifting has shrunk, BIG TIME.

in 2004-2005, it was at mega success. Regular events (like Ocala) sold out within hours - usually no longer than a day or two at most. They would have ~40 spots. The spectator lot was basically full of people just going to watch.

It was all good. The scene had rapid growth, everybody loved it.

Then came the F n' F movie.

People got an elitest attitude with drifting, and denied new comers. I will admit, I still have not watched the movie, and was not crazy about a big budget movie about our sport coming out, but I was also as nice as I could be to new comers because back in the early 2000's, drifters, like boxmod, were nice to me.

Still however, people act all elite in the sport. It is like a keep all out mentality, like some people want to be apart of some special group.

Seriously, the scene is at a minimum. Before the F n' F 3 movie, you had a good scene of mostly people who liked to drift. When the movie came out, about %50 of that original scene left, because they liked the image of being into something not big. They were replaced by the new people who were inspired by said film. A year or two later, the fad movie people left. So we lost some of the original scene + the newcomers = shrink.

Want proof? Look at sites like drifting.com. Back in ~2004, 2005 drifting.com forums would change every second. You hit refresh, a million new threads were there. It was huge. Now, they have only a few post per day. Even the same can be said for SFLdrifters, floridadrift, tamparacing, southeastdrift, etc. It is crazy how much they have changed.

I don't care personally about the image. I drift because it is fun. I drift because I enjoyed when I was way younger, meeting some really cool people at events and experiencing cool stuff. People need to get back to this. You are not cool or elite because you have a RWD car and you like to drift. This image needs to be shed. It needs to just be fun again, everybody needs to go tell their neighbors/friends/family about it and try to get people excited.

It has been recognized by a few, but many people still think it is "too big". Seriously, drifters need to do as we use to, and promote it better. Make it fun for everyone again, make it a big deal again, invite new people. This sport is in serious threat of being in that "fad" zone so many people tried to say it would end up in. Every drifter said it would never happen. Don't prove the doubters right.

but I will support bigger events in South Florida. I think we need this.

I also agree with this statement.

There needs to be more epic events in FL (and everywhere) for that matter.

Big, well publicized (in the scene) events getting people from all around FL.

We don't have the huge epic events (kind of like ocala use to be) anymore.

part of the reason attendance is lower is because there are too many events held in the state. back in ocala days, that would be the only event in the state for 3 months, so everyone was REALLY wanting track time. today we are spoiled with once a month, at several venues = 3+ events a month! and they are run with a 'lets just do crazy stuff' style instead of a 'track day' style.
